Re: The Squid and the Whale.
Saw this tonight with Jeff Daniels in attendance. His Q&A afterward was very interesting (will edit this post with a link to detailed notes after I write them up)... the movie is very good. It is very autobiographical but for me only the good things about that showed up in the movie rather than the bad things. It's charming and funny while being painful and depressing...
it IS pretty Anderson-esque in subject matter and tone but the composition is not nearly so formal and there's more there with the character work for me... I liked this more than Life Aquatic right away. so yeah, good movie. more later... EDIT: finally wrote up my full-on notes with the Q&A coverage of Jeff Daniels. read it HERE Last edited by b.miller; 10-29-2005 at 11:54 PM. |

Re: The Squid and the Whale.
Nice to see this movie getting attention. The director is Norwegian, and has done some great films here in Norway, so I'm looking forward to seeing how he moves on the the american market. It seems to have gotten some good reviews, so it's looking ggod.

Yes, you're absolutely right. Didn't read through the thread as I haven't seen the movie yet, and didn't want any spiolers, hehe. Was talking about Mozart and the Whale. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0392465/
Sorry for the hijack.

Re: The Squid and the Whale.
Finally got around to see this film earlier tonight.
A really wonderful, amusing, and at times painful film. Upon seeing the trailers for the film and learning more about the film I had this growing fear that the film would be very similar in style both in it's filmmaking techniques, but it's writing, to Wes Anderson's work and The Life Aquatic. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this wasn't the case at all. Though there are significant touches throughout the film and it's story both in style and execution to Mr. Anderson's work, I never felt it reached a point where it distracted me from the viewing experience of the film. |
