Could anyone PM me a short snippet of this song? I still aint heard it and have had problems logging on to the RTSR horde to download the one gig its on. I know its on the recent Brixton thing, but £10+ for one song is a bit Darren Pricey for my liking.

Slightly OT but I would just like to say that I am really loving Karl's blog lately, it sort of hits the spot. Maybe one day I will see Karl descending the stairs at Liverpool Street to slide beneath the city! Can't help glancing over every morning as I climb the escalator just in case. Makes my journey a little more bearable each day.

An inspiring day in the studio with R&K despite the radio-fear-infection at the start of it.
A constant supply of tea & demon vibes swung it. Working on the vocal to 'Jumpin then Cran' & versions of 'Diamond Jigsaw', 'Always Loved a Film' & 'Paper Cans Glass'.So thats two more new songs to add to the ones we know exsist but haven't had a official release. So is this now:

You Do Scribble [TBC soon apparantly?]
Small Conker And Twix [On Sunshine soundtrack in some sort of form]
Strumpet
Bamboo
Diamond Jigsaw
Paper Cans Glass
Always Loved A Film
Telematic Peal
Swing Up High
Toobee
Soopher
Santeago
Santeago Peal [can't remembe if this is a combination of two]
Stoffer
Jumping The Cran
Helen's Nails
Quid Odd

Anyone got any more i've forgotten? Who knows, some of these may be improvs we've heard on tours etc. At least UW aren't hiding things from us at all. And Darren Price still has stuff that aint been released...

And who knows what they have in store for us on the upcoming Riverrun release.

My prediction is that the next RiverRun will be released on December 15th, Monday

though this may be completely off... I think it might be the case, given the past dates of releases and that the show will be on Wednesday next week...

It would be VERY nice if the RR is released on December 8th, Monday :D

Indeed it was! There is also the Rick's Bungalow mix of "King of Snake"
http://www.bigscreensatellite.co.uk/king.htm

And LemonWorld, is in fact, in a bungalow house. :)

Also found this tracklist from 2005 listing a whitelabel called "Bungalow1" - perhaps from the sources that became one of the RiverRuns?

Bungalow with Stairs was also the name of a design company run by Rick in the mid-90's (I'll dig up the details and post them later), so maybe Rick is doing the mixing on this show.

Here we go. This is from Tomato ROM 3.

"Bungalow with Stairs" is an "all-media" company founded and produced by Rick Smith of tomato/underworld to enable "difficult things" to be placed in the world.

karl i will never understand your glaring affinity for U2

jose m
12-06-2008, 05:01 AM
its an age thing and growing up in the uk around the post punk period.u2 were once fresh, exciting, mentioned in the same breath with echo & the bunnymen, joy divison, teardrop explodes, comsat angels, the cure, the banshees.you could see these bands on small stages,in the back of pubs,at your uni.it was before things splintered off into tribal groupings of bands under banners like goth, indie, industrial etc etc, fantastic times.
u2 gigs rocked, they were passionate and they often sounded or played better than the other bands.up to and including "joshua tree" they were ace imo.
its easy to look at u2 thru different eyes and see something very different and i'd never argue with anyone about why they don't like them but i think that for karl, and certainly myself, what they did back in the day will always be enough to keep the fan alive.

Spot on. I agree that U2 were the dog's danglies right up to Joshua Tree - after that they became too commercialised for my taste, as so many bands do after years of success in the biz.

I still stick Boy, War and Joshua Tree on from time to time. They are still as good as they ever were.

crazysugarboy
12-06-2008, 03:05 PM
I agree with jose m too.

U2 at the beginning had a sort-of innocent passion. One review I recall around the time of "October" described them as "peter pan-ish".

Good to see the comsat angels name-checked in jose m's post - their track "Independance Day" is simply spine tingling, with a fabulous, other-wordly guitar sound:)

Will a performance be smooth as the record, or will they tinker around and make the shows as improved as we know and love them. A slipped lyric there or an extra drum roll there.

Loving that Russia has now become Thailand. I love Thailand and have been there about 6 times with another visit planned for next September. There is a random vibe about the place as one moment you can be lost in dense jungles full of wildlife and then be brought in to the grey concrete of the city. People are so nice and friendly that they'll go out there way to help you. Not because there looking for a quick hit of Thai Baht, but becuase they are a caring sort of people. And i've never been somewhere where at 4am in the morning, I can buy a Thai Green curry off a street vendor who'll knock it up in a wok for me. Lovely.

sorry to answer just now.
Karl did say in interviews that he sometimes is so much in trance through the music and his dancing that he forgets his lines, or cues or what song is playing... Rick is always there to rescue of course. If you've seen them a couple of times live on stage, you'll see these little things happen, cues given, singing in closed mikes etc.. That is what it makes it a live preformance...
And due to these 'alterations' to the album versions could be called remixes by purists ;)

I've been wondering for years if this kinda obsessing by the media isn't some kinda
'Big Stick' being used to beat us down & keep us down - to knock the stuffing out've us & keep us
dispirited & disorientated. Is somebody afraid we're all gonna take to the streets or summat? - 'cause
I for one am more interested in looking for solutions to every day, not pointing fingers & throwing stones in the greenhouse

The biggest fraud Those In Power ever perpetrated is convincing us little guys that we have no power to change anything. You, Karl, you change everybody's life for the better every time you get out there and do your stuff.

My good news today is I just managed to get a case kicked out at "half time" (after the Prosecution have finished their bit) - a young lad that was put in a headlock and punched in the face by a rozzer, making his nose bleed, then CS sprayed, and charged with "assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty" (yes, really), and all because he had been a bit cheeky. :(

In case anyone hadn't noticed. It snowed in England last night. This of course is an event of such earth-shattering importance that we are subjected to it from all corners of the British media. 4 inches ( someone will no doubt protest it was more ) and the country of my birth grinds to a standstill. Food air-lifted to Yorkshire villages and something equally dreary happening to the trains...or the tracks.

I thought that Karl's diary entry would offer some sort of respite, but no.

http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2009/02/05/podcast-sonic-talk116-whats-the-difference-between-dated-and-classic/

(about 50:25)

Basically he says they can't find a robust, big USB Controller,
so I guess they're going for bit more control over the Computers, presumably Ableton Live.

/edit: he's also stating at the end he's looking for a mixing desk "smaller than a Midas" (56:15)
looks like they wanna go for a more compact stage setup, maybe ...

Like the cut-up lyrics from yesterday's post. Wonder how many days' worth of Karl's writings go into the average song? In the case of "Ring Road", we know it was all written in one outing. But with all those notebooks of lyrics, i wonder how far back Karl digs for lyrics to a new song?

This is a sort-of request for sort-of info linked to one of Karl's u/wlive links back in the summer (I'm being hesitant cos it's not exactly u/w related - altho the link proves that Karl is a a fan).

Where has the full length Youtube vid of ELP performing Fanfare to the Common Man in the Winter Olympic Stadium gone??

And while I'm on the subject of lost vids - the vid of Karl, Rick, and Darren Emm in Japan '96 blasting Pearls Girl ("warriors, come out to play") on the jp version - where is that?? The bit where rick and darren start the elongated improv (after Karl's hyper-lie-down) just has to be one of the coolest u/w moments ever! Someone please reinstate it on the web

I`ll try and get it back up this weekend!

I took all the videos down because when I switched over to the new "news" page (which was 3rd party php code), it would not allow me to embed my .flv player. I`ll try and locate the "offending" code and change it, or else put a link to another page with the video.

Those are some nice memories today, K, thanks.

Just to put some dates to places, the first time the head stock snapped off in Brighton was very early in MKII touring, Sept. 2, 1994. The 2nd snapping at BDO in Auckland was during the AHDO tour on Jan. 17, 2003. They saw the Manic Street Preachers perform in Milan on Nov. 5, 1998, one day before their own performance there.

Yes, I paid my bills on time! It`s just that I`m having a bit of a problem with spam bots attacking the site

The numbers of people visiting the Apple Store interview page weren`t too high, so I don`t know if it was because A) people had already scene it,

I think its based on yukio-e (spelling???) which is a traditional japanese concept that is applied to their style of art and calligraphy... often used to describe the open spaces on Japanese prints...

...a while back i remember reading something karl said about his love of japanese art and how he read a lot about it in books as a child/young artist... and its clear to see the influence of monochromatic caligraphy in the Tomato Art group works and interest in typography...

The Floating World is a book by John Warwicker that's been delayed since like 2004. For a while, there was a promo movie for the book on the Tomato site, and the background music was "Simple Distinctive".

I remember just 8 years ago, sometime shortly after Emerson left, there was a joke going around

and everyone was mortified even at the thought of this! Now it it seems as though moves in this
direction are welcomed like some great advance forward!

(4th down in the column with the yellow circle), and "King of Snake" (to the right of Moaner).
Hmmm...what is the "yellow circle"? Ball drop maybe?

TheBang
07-24-2009, 02:11 AM
The big yellow circle is the round video screen they have now.

So going across the top of the cards it shows what the stage setup looks like during each stage of the show. The first part of the show has the Inflatables standing vertically next to each other to form the video screen, then the round video screen comes down in the second part of the show, then the Inflatables come back in the traditional haphazard arrangement. I'm not sure what the big black bar above Moaner indicates.

The one immediately under the circle reads "You Do Scribble." And the first one under the vertical Inflatables looks like "Nu Train". Underneath "Rez/Cowgirl", I think it's "Juanita". The cards might have BPM numbers written on them too.

This is probably the setlist for Glade, but I wouldn't know since NO ONE HAS POSTED IT YET.

I checked http://uwlive.rowla.com/ and the Glade set list they have posted is as follows:

Nu Train
King of Snake
Between Stars
Born Slippy NUXX

I think this is obviously not complete, but who knows. Maybe Underworld had a shorter spot, but highly unlikely!

How did you miss the vocoder on the last album?

rudydaduck

just did not feel like it was given a starring platform like it had on all the other albums. i always feel that texturally, when it's used, it's a side personality almost separate from hyde..... something, a voice, that seems to be coming from a city itself at night . . . . whispered along metal tracks as trains carry on or empty streets as some loner does a walk of shame.

never felt that presence on the last album and felt it could have had a great place. so maybe not vocorder per se but the personality behind the vocorder on cups say and not just karl's voice filtered.

I've been reorganizing all my Underworld music files and was saddened to discover the tracklisting pages for old web broadcasts are down. Does anybody happen to have the graphics associated with the archived broadcasts? I'm looking to add them to the sound files.

I still don't understand why various numbers are written next to a track on those cards when UW are picking a set.

TheBang
08-24-2009, 05:10 AM
Well, bottom left number is BPM. Bottom right is the song key. The top number must be the number of the song in the sequencing software or something. That is, the song number matches from night to night and doesn't change. For example, in today's picture, Dirty Epic is 30 and Kittens is 31, the same numbers they had on the Vegas setlist (http://www.aloha.com/~tabanger/underworld/lvsetlist.jpg).

And they had 60 songs sequenced (http://www.native-instruments.com/en/community/tech-talk/underworld/) after Malta and Spain earlier this year. With "Diamond Jigsaw" and "Between Stars" being numbers 66 and 67, respectively, that's about right.

Anyone wanna go through the setlists and match songs to song numbers?

Just what is it Karl , with you and "bad news"?
What do expect the media to be: a kind of 'Truman Show'?
Just really try and imagine, just for a second, what a newspaper front page would look like if it carried just good news.
There are wars and earthquakes and death and suffering. It's actually
what we humans are far more interested in (when reading about other humans) It's called "human interest" (a term thought up by the evil media of course). Your neighbour going on holiday with his family to Spain, having a wonderful, coming back healthy and tanned, is dull. Your neighbour going to Spain and being murdered in Ibiza by "Tongy" is much more exciting to read about.
There's blood on that tissue, on the floor of the train, Karl, not Eau de Cologne.

there can't be good news without any bad news. that doesn't justify how media conglomerates temper with any of the current affairs in the world. too much is at stake for too many powerful people. the media has the power to control. TV is the mass religion, it doesnt take a genius to figure that out.

on the brighter side of life...our news anchor talks about 'Who Stole the Web Shop mystery' and that's good news
