Cows: We are eating apples.
Croc: But this is a pear tree!

For this movie of Karel Appel, they also made shots through a frame. A few years ago there was a program about dutch museums and that picture, with the hole in it was also in the collection in the archives.
The paint on those paintings is still wet inside the places where it is thick and by that very hard to maintain and restoration work.

I don't think Karl gets enough thanks for doing this daily picture blog. THANKS, KARL! Actually, thanks to Rick and all the Underworld crew for keeping the website up to date and interesting. I check it every day :)
I think this those stick pictures were great. I like the series he's shooting now, with the description included, it's kinda humorous :)
I think we can say that it's something like "conceptual land art" especially when there are two pictures as today.

Well, I earn my living as a book binder/conservator, so I should be able to rustle up something. Perhaps, given the subject matter, a Japanese 5-hole stab-sewn binding would be appropiate with printed silk covers. I am currently rebinding my copy of "In the Belly of Saint Paul" (Eithiopic chain stitch sewing, oak boards and "alum-tawed" leather covering). A link to pics will appear shortly. Nice. I like this forward progress. Here are my constructive criticisms:
1. As others have said, would be nice to be able to buy individual tracks. I also have the promo CD's, but I'd like digital copies of the unmixed originals.
2. The MP3 pricing is not bad. A smidge high in comparison to, say, Amazon MP3 or iTunes, but not bad.
3. The lossless premium seems maybe 50-75p too high.
4. Would prefer the lossless to be FLAC, or zipped at the very least, to conserve bandwidth and disk space. (The download may already be zipped, I don't know. I'm just going by the posted file size which appears to be uncompressed in any way.) Or like NIN did, offer ALAC in addition to FLAC (for easy iTunes/iPod compatibility). I see no reason to offer uncompressed lossless.
5. For Lenny Penne, since you're requiring that customers purchase all 5 in either MP3 or FLAC (no mix-and-match), I think it should be easy (and only fair) that Lenny Penne be given in matching format (MP3 or FLAC).

Seconded, nice progress.
Will the older riverruns be made available in lossless format?
I imagine that would be a sticky situation, (how should they be priced for people who purchased the mp3 versions?) -- but I hope you can work something out.
2. The MP3 pricing is not bad. A smidge high in comparison to, say, Amazon MP3 or iTunes, but not bad.

I think the princing is alright, at least I know I support Underworld directly. How much do they get for a 79p download on iTunes? I'll bet no more than 5p.
Also, the Euro is very strong compared to the Pound... :D

I agree.

UW got nothing for the promos. I think it's only fair to pay now for the whole thing. Of course, there are other legitimate reasons for preferring single tracks, like if you don't like the remixes or already bought digital tracks from Beatport.
I'm just a bit bummed because as much as I'd love to have that bonus Lenny Penne remix, I already shelled out a bunch of money for all of the 12" releases when they first came out. I really just can't bring myself to spend another $25 US on all the same mixes again just so I can get one more new one. 25 bucks is a lot to spend for one remix.
Cheers to Underworld for offering it as a bonus that way, but it sure would be great if loyal fans like me could just purchase the new remix without having to buy all 5 singles a second time to get it. :(
Although....maybe I could sell my 12" copies so I can buy the full quality digital versions. There could be hope yet!

There are plenty of other times where UW doesn't get my money directly though e.g. I bought AHDO on the secondary market. It would be nice to buy these if I had unlimited funds. Unfortunately, having already paid $150+ for the promos and vinyls, I can't justify spending more again for the same stuff.
See, that's the thing. In early 2006, Underworld had said that in addition to the vinyls the tracks would be available for purchase on their website. They never were though. If they had been made available then as they are now, I probably would have bought those instead of the promo CD's. And when they make them available, I buy all kinds of things directly from them: Live in Tokyo, all the LHN discs, In the Belly of St. Paul.

Which truly is a shame but that is by their choice, make the promotional material appeal to collectors by including material that is not available on the standard release, send it out to some douche on the rotation list who is not going to use it for it's intended purpose but supplement his/her income by selling it to the highest bidder. Sadly it is whomever makes the material available who makes the money.
well, its a start..i guess.
Indeed it is but at times I can't help feeling that I am being punished for loyalty and having an obsessive compulsive disorder when it come down to the music though.

I agree with the collective that this is quite underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful that Underworld have finally made some progress on this digital store, and I'm glad it looks like it will be archival.
But beginning with EPs and promo singles that are already several years old seems rather a bad idea, as fans loooooong ago gave up hope of the band making these things widely available and obtained the music illegally. I for one would have happily paid Underworld whatever they asked for new songs and remixes years ago when this stuff came out (and I will continue to hope to pay them whatever they want for new music going forwad), but they just wouldn't let me. Now, asking me to pay these prices and in these restricted formats for old music and dodgy remixes is disappointing. Let's not forget Nine Inch Nails launched a site where fans could download virtually every dodgy NIN remix for free.
Thinking about just how old the RiverRun stuff is, I find myself wondering if this is what a record company's actually good for: getting the music out there, whether on iTunes or in shops or wherever; just AVAILABLE because people actually WANT to pay for it, and they want to pay for it NOW.
Going forward, I hope we see the unreleased versions and true rarities others have mentioned offered in mp3, FLAC, Apple Lossless, and hopefully zipped for convenience's sake.

As someone who didn't get these the first time around, it's great to finally have these available to get. It's too bad at this point I already got them all on promo cd's and 12". I'll probably get the lossless versions here, but the collector in me won't want to sell of the hard-copies I have already acquired.
I agree it would have been spectacular if they would have released something new to start it off. My only other complaint is that they don't have the Riverruns and Lenny Penne available in high quality. The Riveruns would be big, but they could charge more as they did with the others.
I'm also noticed that the Live Here Now CD store is listed as being "temporary" on the new shop homepage. While their CD's are nice, the slow turnaround time and zero communication is something I won't be missing. I hope UW takes over and through their site offers downloads, actual CD's, or both. Though I like having actual CD's if given the option.

I've just listened to the lossless Play Pig (Pig & Dan Mix 2) from the store when I noticed some typical MPEG artifacts... The pre-echo artifacts at 0:03 are quite obvious. I'd certainly expect to hear them on the MP3 version but not on the lossless one. It's the same on the promo CDs. Some of the remixes are affected, but the UW tracks seem fine.
I thought I'd check the spectrum of the tracks to confirm my suspicion (some examples):
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Mix 3) (http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/3581/03pe9.png)
JAL To Tokyo (Paul Woolford Dub) (http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/9207/03dm4.png)
That looks like some MPEG compression to me. Maybe the iTunes MP3 encoder.
It surprises me that those files are supposed to be the lossless masters. Has there been an encoding error or are these really the best versions available? Have these 'lossy' masters also been used for the vinyl version?
Furthermore the 300x300 pixel artworks seem a little too small for PC viewing. I rather expected something like 300 dots per inch than 300 dots for the whole cover. Some words are barely decipherable.

You must have ears like a er...hawk. Mine must be clogged with wax. Why not get a stats list going where we can compare flaws with various formats! CD V MP3 v Viynl V Tape!
People on here never seem happy.
I don't have golden ears. But I do care for sound quality. If you don't, that's fine.
But that is not the point. The point is that I paid for lossless files but got lossy files that have been converted to lossless. There should be a good reason for that that I'd like to know. I somehow feel ripped off.

In UW's defense, the web site doesn't say they are giving you the "Lossless Masters", they say they are giving you "CD Quality AIFF Files". Considering that AIFF-C is commonly referred to as AIFF in the Mac world, it shouldn't be too completely surprising if they are AIFF-C files, albeit with the compression turned almost off. The files ARE huge, after all.
It sounds like you might be trying to say these AIFF files were created from the mp3's, but I would really doubt that that is the case. UW aren't that heartless. It could be that the samples used in the masters are lossy. These things were sort of created "for fun" anyway. I suppose the real test would be for someone to rip the vinyl and post the waveform like you did for comparison. That's the only way to be sure.
Any takers?
At the same time, I purchased the mp3's and didn't notice any compression artifacts, so obviously my ears are no meter for this level of quality, and I don't have a fancy spectrometer like you... :P

i think you're onto something with this. The RR songs were supposedly experiments, written on laptops in transit/hotels, etc. I don't think that means they are sub-par sonically or "lossy", but they are by admission of the band, rougher and more immediate. Some of the unusual sounds might reflect this.
Concerning the mp3s, i recall a few compression glitches in "Lovely Broken Thing" when i first downloaded it (wow, was that 10/05? Doesn't seem that long ago!), and later there was a change in the bitrate of PFE (i think). But these certainly didn't distract me from the experience, either. I'm used to hearing mixes in 128 or 160 kb/s, so maybe i'm less critical. Then again, I'm guessing that since many people are listening to mp3 compression of some sort anyway, the lossy artifacts are inherent to their listening experience.
I can see how one might be disappointed to shell out the bucks for the AIFF and hear apparent problems. For me, i'm happy with the 192 kb/s mp3s' burned to CD with the printed out pdf. Feels more homemade, like a personal, somewhat -unexpected (at least back in 05-06) gift from UW.

I don't mind a delay, I just think it's funny :)design processes are notorious for taking 14012093802938 times longer than you anticipate.

But, but . . . they promised!
It's possible that it was just removed to condense space on the front page. Both the BoJ and Ring Road graphics have been size reduced since their original posting. I assume to make the webcast more prominent at the top.

nice set, i love the presentation. although the thing about highlighting an exact, precise machine that complex and specially geared is that perhaps the photos should reflect that by being as precise as the machine itself.

i guess i meant to say that there's no focus at all in some of these. as in even where the focal point is, it's not as sharp as it should be. because it's blurred.

jeez, chill out. I honestly didn't know if you knew or not, hence the Wikipedia link. Which ones in particular have no focus at all? I only gave it a cursory glance, but I thought every photo had a point of focus.
Edit: So I got home and blew up the high-rez PDF on my 30-inch monitor. Every page except page "05" (page 6 of the PDF) has a well-defined focus subject. On page "05" the field of focus seems to be in the middle of the cylinder as you can see the left side of the cylinder in focus as it curves around. I don't know if that was an artistic choice, but all the photos aside from that one seem fine to me.

Who is the Brotherhood of the Setlist? Rick and Darren?
Judging by personal experiences, they all get a say in what is played. But the setlist is never stuck to at all, doesn't account for what improvs will be played and if any of Darrens stuff is to be slid in.
gillenium

Yeah, their setlists are pretty meaningless. You should see the line of cue cards that they stuck on the table at Atlanta. Had songs like Little Speaker and Push Upstairs that were not played at all.

maybe now they don't now,but on last years tour
they stuck to them 95-100% of the time..
(for the shows i saw them)..especially when
the stats showed them repeating songs,
orders, and other facets of the show..multiple times..

Dunno about backstage food, should be good for all those super-artists. But, best grub I ever had on a festival was at Roskilde, on a normal plate, with normal metal fork/knife/spoon, sitting in a nice tent at a table in a plastic chair eating roasted duck and had to choose between 5 salads... And the roasted ox next to the green tent before seeing The Residents. Still water fills my mouth thinking about it.

Well done.
With shipping, The Bells The Bells comes out to just a tad more than what I paid for it through HMV. I'd imagine it's much better for U.K. fans, and possibly European too.
Bring on the exclusives!
yes the shipping costs are different for locations around the world.
for the moment i've kept the store nice and slick, i didn't want to overload everyone with 'one-offs' and exclusives; far to much candy... but be warned we are not like the high street, when it says limited it means its the box under mike's desk or the unsee albums from karls collection (just don't tell him); if you see anything on the store that says 'could take up to 2 years to ship', that'll be something i've made...

Yeah, impressive docu. Right from the start you are stunned by the size of things and impact of china's industrial/economic revolution.
For those thousands of people working in those massive factories, doing highly repetitive jobs for extremely low pay (and surely no benefits to speak of), it really begs the question "What is the purpose/meaning of life?" Is it to slave away for a huge "private tyranny" (a corporation), making cheap products with 5-10 year engineered obsolescence, with the end result that they may come around full circle and end up in a toxic dump somewhere back in the country where they originated from, only to be picked apart by another group of unwitting servants, who will extract the useful materials and send them off to a factory where the process starts all over again? But, I guess you have to eat!
The future of the world looks bleak, but unfortunately the present looks pretty bad already!
Thank god for people like Rick and Karl who bring some light into it :)

And back when this kind of film was new, my dad somehow fixed a pack of polaroid film to the back of a (I think I remember even a glassplate) bellows voigtlander like this (not this model) http://www.thecamerasite.net/03_Folder_Cameras/Images/Voigtlander-Plate.jpg Large apertures for DOF and Landscape shots somehow gave rather good results.

Peter Gabriel's third album - the cover artwork was produced by taking polaroid pics and then manipulating them before they were fully developed (I don't truly understand the technique) to create the "melting" look.
It is such a shame that his truly amazing, yet expensive, photo process is now essentially dead. Oh well

Hi all.
I cant seem to ever listen to the live broadcasts or the listen again. the controls just dont appear on the screen.
I have had this issue for ages but never got to the bottom of it.

Agreed, I check UWLive.com over coffee every morning and this has been great reading -- it's one thing for fans to track down UW history, and something entirely different to hear the inside story from the band. Karl's perspective on the emotional bond between musician and instrument has also been really interesting.

The smell of hot Vimto, Camping in Criccieth, Canoeing at Black Rock Sands, Shopping in Porthmaddoc, Watching Logan's Run at the run-down cinema in Llandudno and dreaming of an imaginary future in Portmeirion.
As a teenager I was packed off each school holidays to stay with my musical uncle who'd 'retired from the biz' and moved to Snowdonia in the early 70s. Through him I met Cynthia Lennon and a very young Julian. He also introduced me to artists including Ed Povey (http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northwest/halloffame/arts/edwardpovey.shtml) whose work could be seen brightening up the walls of Bangor shops under that slate grey sky.
I had my fortune told by the hippies living in their teepees just outside Bethesda. She said "You'll do something in music or art and whilst you'll be happy, you'll never make any money" while a well-worn Solid Air LP played on the record player.
I remember this every time I visit Castell Deudraeth (http://www.portmeirion-village.com/content.php?nID=24&lID=) or The Village (http://www.portmeirion-village.com/content.php?nID=21&lID=) and wonder "was she simply making an educated guess?"
Thanks for the wednesday morning memories Mr H :)
Great memories!
I used to love Black Rock Sands, one of the only beaches I remember where you could drive a car straight on the beach!
Used to stay on Shell Island camp site where the sea covered the road at high tide and one of my fave parts of the trip was visiting Portmerion and I was too young to know of The Prisoner! I visited again recently and stay at Snowdonia what a quality part of the world!
Also Wales seems to have Castle's that are in amazing condition, well protected!

Its a small world, I stayed at Shell Island for a few days last year, and the year before (amazing place, has it's own microclimate - pity it's usually a very soggy one), and we've had a few day trips to Porthmaddoc too. I've moved out from the suburban sprawl of Romford, and I'm now living 160 miles away in Worcester with my girlfriend. I had no idea when I moved here, but stumbling around Wikipedia I notice that there's an Underworld connection here too, it's where Karl was born.

Without knowing it I'd let the flow take hold of me & was opening to the possibilities of the day, free from the baggage of pre-conceptions. The hump had slipped off my back & my guard was down.
'Strangely' it turned into a really great day & though the dark was wet & the roads treacherous as I drove home I slowed down, turned on the radio & went with the flow.

Could you anyone tell me an e-mail address of contact a person responsible in charge underworldlive.com shop?
I bought digital contents and physical CDs at underworldlive.com shop on Nov. 19th.
For the first few days, I could download the digital contents, but I couldn't get all the stuffs due to low speed of line, and then they disapeared from the list of my account page, so I can't get the rest of them now.
Meanwhile, I haven't heared anything about the order status of physical CDs. I've just received e-mail from paypal.com showing I made payment via paypal.com. I'm totally in the dark whether underworldlive.com has accepted my order or not.
I have already send e-mails two times to support@underworldlive.com following the procedure described in faq, but I've not received anything.
Could you please tell me how to contact a shop person?
