july 2007 - goodnight

over the coming weeks, we're launching version 3 of underworldlive.com

you'll notice we've switched-off new member registration and the shop, which allows us to migrate the user data for all the existing members of underworldlive.com to the new site

once we've migrated all the data to the new site and fully tested it, you'll be able to log-in with your existing details and access your purchased digital products and even change your registered email address and password

we hope you enjoy the all new underworldlive.com and thank you for your support and patience!!

In any case, I see it now! Sexy. Reminds me of the Live in Tokyo cover.

Nifty stuff on there. A new "Mo Move" video from Moscow (NOT a cell phone video). And a studio(?) version of "Can U Feel This Bass?"

OK - I know I'm spoiling here, but, these images were part of the visuals at Knebworth. No idea what tune though, really can't remember. And it may not even have been synched to the tune that the lyrics inspiring the visuals came from either. :)

Phonestrap, a nice little bluesy, acoustic recording. Never really heard Karl sing this way before. Perhaps the mic in the picture was the one they were using to record this track. Looks like an old ribbon microphone. I could really get used to this kind of underworldlive.com!!

Looking at the new album artwork and the book of jam images from UW/Tomato...i'm reminded very much of some of Graham Wood's earlier videos' layered effects (Spikee, Cowgirl, Most 'Ospitable, Spoonman, Dark train come to mind)...the text and colorful video pix entering and fading in rapid succession.

Did Graham Wood do the cover to OWB? Or are these jams and layered techniques the "Tomato Style"?

the way it works is they monitor traffic to certain sites and certain types of e-commerce sites. I think Ant changed the code for the site, into a e-commerce site (resembling a porn site) therefore they blocked it. The only other explanation is that their are many Dirties at my work using uwlive.com, which is inconceivable (sadly)

Nope they never block dirty.org, simply not enough penis and vagina talk (in their 'vulgar' forms). ;)

I was curious if there is going to be any webcasting or streaming audio for any of the US shows? I know there was mention of it in a promo interview that Karl Hyde gave to Billboard.com. I can't make it this time around to the California shows, and this would be the next best thing to being there.

mentioned there were a lot of technical issues last night to my flatmate this morning, who went last night but doesn't know a lot of Underworld, and he said the same thing.

I noticed a few screw-ups, but nothing really to distract from show. I thought the biggest screw-up of last night was when the rolling, building drums at the beginning of NUXX finally breaks for the first time into the familiar warm duh-na-duh where most finally realize what song it is. they were about 1.5 seconds too late and the drums had started to fade.

off in about two hours to tonight's show. I'm skipping most of Oakenfold this time.

:DAs much as I think they would like to come over here more often, this quote from Karl in a Boston Herald interview illustrates why they tend to visit the states so infrequently.

UK electronic duo Underworld hasn’t brought its legendary live show to the United States in more than five years, but it’s certainly not because of laziness or lack of interest.

Blame simple economics.

“It’s very expensive to come to America,” explained Karl Hyde, one half of the seminal dance act. “It’s the only place we lose money. And we haven’t lost money in 20 years.”

“It’s a drag because we’ve got so many cool fans here,” Hyde said from San Francisco. “It’s kind of heartbreaking when you can’t come and play live to the people who give you daily support. But we bit the bullet this time.”

Anyone else misssing the old style uwlive entries where the text was written on the photos themselves?

I'm trying not to say this from an archivist perspective as someone who would save every image that was posted everyday, but I really liked the layered effect of the posts in the past.

Whether it was a photo taken by Karl on stage with his own text or from someone else's camera.

These new images while very similar to the previous incarnation of underworldlive seem to be a bit different and off at times. I understand this is something to be expected when change occurs, but I really had grown to love the text placed over an image from a camera phone in such a way that it would shape and direct the viewers eye to a point or area in the picture. The wrapping of the text, sometimes sparse, other times verbose, seemed fitting for the photo, time, and place.

I would be curious to know what others here think of the new photoblog incarnation up at the site now and even what Karl or those in the underworld crew have to say about it.

I'm sure there are many positives and negatives to the new incarnation, such ease of editing and posting.

Enjoyed the Autotrader recording that's crept into several of the live shows (e.g. Cocoon club gig 06). The panning and snipping of the quoted years is fun, and makes Karl's voice sound like a text-to-speech recording!

Also love the images for the OWB gatefold...that would be lovely to have in poster form, say 4" or larger to a side! ;)

I linked this in aNt's thread also, but it's apparently a traditional Welsh hymn called Calon Lân:

Sorry if this has come up before, but what is Underworld's connection to Wales? I mean, it comes up regularly in their work, such as this Welsh hymn, "Best Mamgu Ever", Welsh language lessons in the radio broadcast, just to name a few. Can anyone enlighten me?

Wow, I wonder what exactly inspired today's diatribe. I must admit, I thought San Francisco Walk was another recording by Karl, but I guess it was Rick, after all.

Of course the press is going to focus on the clowny boy wildly waving his muppet arms, rather than the comparatively boring gaunt man hidden behind the desk pushing buttons. We know better though.

As my imagination ran wild over the past week, wondering what would happen if Rick's illness were more severe, I realized that despite Karl's recent musings about bringing in new people to take over Underworld, it simply wouldn't be the same without either of them. It's BOTH of them, working together, inspiring each other, that have created the amazing music that touches all of us here and brings us together.

(BTW, -1, in the second to last paragraph, you get to read "intimated" again. ;))

Was trying to cut and paste this and, being a n00b, I don't have the l33t skillez to do it. But I was really moved by this piece. Not a diatribe, just a setting straight of records, imo.

Of course we know that UW only works because of the chemical reaction between these two. It seems like the press don't, though.

Really enjoyed today’s post, so raw and honest.
Call it coincidence, but only 2 days ago I discovered these 2 old interviews with Karl & Rick
(both at different times and on the release of different albums).

http://www.thenitmustbetrue.com/rsmith/rsmith.html (fantastic read)
http://www.ijamming.net/Music/Underworld1.html

It’s clear from both articles that R&K are 100% dedicated to the process of
creating together, each with their specific roles. What’s also obvious is Rick’s
commitment – a true "perfectionist" or as Karl put it "the core".

Big respect
And thanks again sharing your thoughts on this.

In fact - I may be a n00b but I am a l33t touch-typist and decided to retype word for word, comma for comma, this piece and post it here because I am aware that it may not be on the site come tomorrow or Monday and it would be a shame for Dirts who don't log on over the weekend to miss it. So here goes (in 2 parts):

In the World of P & P - Is it just me but has anyone else felt a strange disparity between what we know or believe to be the truth & what we read in the news? Ouch! - I'm not turning capitol 'P' political on you - no - rather I was was thinking in this instance about the way in which Mr S & Mr H are often portrayed, that the truth is often quite different & is in fact more interesting than we might at first be lead to believe.
Now please don't for one moment suspect me of ingratitude for the support the duo & team have been shown all over the World this year. Indeed the praise & enthusiasm with which the latest physical release has been received has been deeply inspiring, humbling & a real smile

Yet are we to believe -
that the impish fellow really does all that the press
would lead us to believe he does? Is it all so simple or is the picture
much richer & far more interesting?

OK, so we know he wanders the streets
with his notebook and cellphone
gathering text for the boys to use in the studio & taking lo-fi snaps
for the brilliant (but often overlooked) John Warwicker to curate
into beautiful artworks far richer than the raw photographs themselves.
And what of the text?
Where did the idea come from?
We've heard about Sam Shepard and Lou Reed but let's just go back
for a moment to the end of the 80s when UW MKII collapsed
& Rick (left alone with the responsibility of clearing the band's debts
& salvaging what he could make of the original studio)
decided he wanted to make music for the dancefloor & set about looking for
a DJ to work with. We all know he found someone & what happened next,
but what we con't hear is how it was he who told Karl that he would have to
radically change the way he wrote words so that they didn't have to
keep waiting for him to finish the lyrics in order to finish a track.
And are we to believe that the conversation finished there – that he had
no further influence on the way text was gathered, sung and recorded?
Or that such influence doesn't continue up until this very moment?

BeautifulBurnout

Live
We've seen the live shows & jammed with the boys on stage – riding waves
of energy exchanged between us all. Transported by the music the grooves
& the performance to places that have left us sweaty and smiling.
Yet, after such nights when we read the reviews the following day
don't we think it more than a little strange that the imp gets pretty much all
the attention & Rick gets little more than a passing line – tagged onto
“...and Darren”. Who do we imagine is the backbone, the core, the inspiration,
the producer & director of these celebrations – these expressions of joy?
Surely our lad with the groovy moves can't be conjuring such magic
by wiggling hhis glitter trainers & if we're to believe he's out on the streets
writing it all down & snapping away like Daido Moriyama on speed
then who is taking responsibility for everything else?
The boys tell us the gigs aren't programmed, that they're live & that there are
real instruments up there on stage, so who's playing them, who thought of them,
developed them & keeps moving everything forward – year after year?
D'you see where I'm going with this?

And who do we imagine
drives the web site, the radio shows, the tv shows,
the events, the productions, the photographs, the interactive projects,
the live recordings, the filmings, the videos, the mastering, the Abbey Road
recording sessions, the working with other artists. Who do we imagine
'makes' the records the boys put out? Who is at the core keeping everything
moving on from stagnating?

And if Karl is into Lo-Fi photography
then who is it that takes all thos beautiful hi-def images we see
on the web site every day? The brilliant 'mastering' series, the nature images,
the macro images, the plug-holes and bead-curtains (darn I wish I had an eye
that could've seen that bead curtain in that way...I was truly jealous),
& dogs & ponies & painted castles?
Who stood at one've the more dangerous crossroads in San Francisco
making street recording to upload to the site & continues to do that
night after night from cities all over the world? Who is it who updates
the whole of the web site week after week well into the wee hours
long after most of us here at Uwlive after slipped off to bed?
Well, I'm guessing here, but I'm going to take a wild stab & say
I bet it's not Karl.

There's more
much more dear brothers & sisters
The story goes on & is much richer than even I have intimated here,
yet somehow, for some reason, whenever its told it gets neatened up
& the core gets cut out. Yes there's much more to tell

But it's late
& I must sleep
whilst somewhere not far from here
Some one who gets virtually no recognition
will be working through the night again
because he sees a way to inspire us

Awesome stuff indeed. :)

To those of us who love the work of Underworld, the union of Rick and Karl, we know very well that they are literally one foot in front of the other, repeating, necessary for "Underworld" to be "Underworld". Rick and Karl, you are both loved for your abilities not only on your own, but your ability to play off of each other so well.

I'm glad BeautifulBurnout posted that here, because I felt that it needed to be on the fourm and was going to type it out if it hadn't been done already.

I've always been interested in the process behind the work, but we don't often get to see what's behind the curtain. I've never really known if that's because journalists don't get told any of it, or because they don't write about it when they do get told.

It's easy to assume that Mr S makes a melody, LeDarrenDeJour sticks a kickdum under it then Mr H sings... and maybe some bands do work like that, but I doubt something as rich as Underworld's output could concievably emerge from such a linear process.

I've always wondered about division of labour within UW, and I'm glad to read that it's as complex as I'd imagined.

What happens when we have downloaded a RiverRun item three times?
Do we have to buy it again?

IMO this limitation leads to nothing:
- It won't stop piracy. (DRM also does not)
- People who got the RiverRuns from UWlive v1 did not know about this limitation when they bought it.
- also it's fairly easy to circumvent at the moment...

So why was it introduced?

Why can't I download a digital item from my user page?

Each time you purchase a digital product from us you get three chances to download it. If you have exceeded three downloads on any given product, you will no longer be able to download it. Most Digital Service Providers only allow one download per purchase. We aim to be a little more flexible and accommodating than that! Next to each purchased digital product displayed on your user page, you will see a number - this is the number of downloads you have remaining.

or is this a policy put in place recently? i can't remember the last time i did anything over there. it's been.... well probably since LBT.

Jan
10-28-2007, 04:08 AM
When there was still UWlive v1 there were no restrictions of this kind. You could download your RiverRuns as many times as you wanted.

But now it's different. Reminds me of that crappy Bioshock protection. That's why I did not buy Bioshock, and if I wasn't a fanboy I surely would not buy any more RiverRuns.
IMO any restriction of this kind is DRM and thus unacceptable.
Look what happened in the past: The Big Sister package was encoded in the wrong way when it was released the first time (48000 Hz, 160 kbps). A few hours later it was replaced by the proper version. And if that wasn't enough some time later it was replaced again by another repack. I've got three different repacks of Big Sister.
LBT has two different versions, one with a somewhat higher resolution artwork.

What if something like that happens with the next digital item? Do I lose a download if I get a wrongly encoded version like what happened with Big Sister?

Were there problems with the old system? Was it abused?

jan; not sure i understand you, u can download the file and do whatever u like with it. old site was becoming a hosting server for fake accounts, not ideal. this way we can bring u more stuff with the bandwidth we have. the counter only reduced when the file is fully downloaded. i'll look into the repacking thing, that shouldnt happen anyway.

that, and also, i just dont get all of this complaining on face value. to call an allotment of three downloads equivalent to DRM and unacceptable would sound like an invitation for me to tell you to take a hike if i were running this thing. DRM places major restrictions on the mp3 itself, this is only restrictions on the site because i'm sure people who arent you and me and other dirts were letting their internet buddies just use their account or just set up ghost accounts for mass abuse. so no, it's not DRM. secondly i cant think of too many places that let you download more than one copy of what you bought. third why would you ever need to have unlimited downloads? assuming most of us have it, that THREE chances to back up. demanding that the well is endless or youre throwing a fit is just bratty.

and fourth wtf was all that nonsense concerning the encoded stuff? OBVIOUSLY if something screws up it's not going to count against a download.

well you could always try and record the audio in something like Audacity.
Not sure why they're making everything as streaming, non-downloadable quicktimes though, it's kind of annoying to have to jump trough hoops in order to save something. Surely this is a waste of everyone's bandwith as every time we wanna listen to something again we have to stream it from the site.

Maybe they're trying to save their own bandwidth. Remember when they posted the Moscow Rez/Cowgirl video, and it brought down the server for days?

It seems like they have carte blanche through their Apple QuickTime arrangement, so streaming it through Akamai gives them unlimited bandwidth.

Great to hear Underworld doing their own remixes again, and this one has that epic never-ending feel that I miss so much from the Dark & Long days.

Ten minutes of pure bliss! I've always thought it strange that the band, who take such pride and pleasure in reworking their tracks constantly live, stopped doing their own mixes, especially as they do it so much better than anyone else.

It would be a real shame if this mix didn't get a release, this one needs to be heard at 3am on an empty motorway.

yeah ok, I guess it's not streaming trough their own site. Still sucks though. I've been trying to somehow donwload the source .mov but it seems impossible. I can get the correct url by opening the ref qt in a texteditor but if I put that into my browser it's still not downloading.
So I guess the only way is to actually record the audio trough an external program.

Oblivion with Bells and the Breaking & Entering soundtrack also fall under the "riverrun project" label, according to Karl in some interview. He described the riverrun project as everything they've produced since A Hundred Days Off.

I don't think this verifies anything, except that Bamboo is unreleased and the river is still flowing ...

If they'd do an Oblivion Ball in the UK, I would be wasting $700 in a second for a plane ticket over. Money, work and school be damned! 120 Days, SMD, and the Orb and the Underworld boys in their home country? Sign me the hell up!

Luckily for me, however, I don't see them putting that together overnight, so I have a bit of time to save up some extra "dirty" funds.

That being said, I wish they'd do one in the US, but I really doubt that will ever happen, plus I'd much rather see a show of that magnitude in the UK. I'd imagine the vibe would be much different, unless it was another show under the stars in Central Park. That was simply magical and hardly anything could ever top that.

But anyways, the video - bleh. This album has seen its share of mediocre videos. I liked it better than Taylor's videos, but that's not saying much. Didn't care too much for the new mix either. But, thanks again to Underworld for providing members content first!

there's a fine line being tread

between lo-budget, non-flashy ideas justly getting their props for that subliminal charm and creative simplicity that lack of funds tend to spark

and just dicking around with no emphasis except squarely on the fact that this is shoddy and not successful in communicating much of anything

i really hate this video, but that's fine.
i can see a time where i might like it, mainly because it's so dark, meshing the sense of touch with sound, and letting different forms fade in and out... is interesting in that sense of cognitive ambiguity and letting the visuals exist without focusing on anything in particular, but any stretched conceptual favors like that really do go out the window with actually watching it.

edit: at least i want to see it again to see if i really hate it that much

hey you think we've been asked enough to opine re: writing about love?

simply put, i dont.
it either tritely boils down to the millions of small things that supposedly form this nucleus of intimacy
or it's hopelessly vague; using made up words and tenuously stringing things together in an uninformative mash of adjectives and hand gestures.
it's people like jacques brel who write about love, among other things, that sees and feels things so perceptively, and finagles the language so well to express it, that i'm actually extremely envious of it.

but whenever i try i think of what i react most strongly to with the person i love: the mild frustration that they're so grateful for something that i would always do for them, the fact that i can't think of anything i wouldnt do for them, those moments when you're talking where you feel that you understand so completely what they're saying about what they want, hope for, need, distrust, hate, aspire to... that conversation devolves into a series of "yeah"s, after which i apologize and explain my excitement on something agreed that is both important *and* nuanced, whenever i feel that i can actually help someone i love in a meaningful way... the feeling that i dont need to give everything i have, that i just need to give myself... when you can happily call it 'fucking' instead of 'making love'... then i try to look behind that and see what drives it, and if possible look behind that too, until i can make something out of a tangled mess that goes deeper than what's 'real'

then it fails.

so i stopped trying and just accepted it and knew it was happily percolating in my soul, keeping me whole and healthy.

edit: obviously its limited to interpersonal stuff because that's the kind that keeps me in ways more fundamental than type of work or music or *things*. that's a one-sided deal that you have to keep for yourself and use to love other people with.
