Muslims and the Presidential race
This article speaks to some of what's been discussed here. It's about the role of Muslim-Americans (not a personal fan of hyphenates, but it gets the point across here) in the current political process. As you can imagine, it seems that the use of "Muslim" as an accusation meant to smear Obama hasn't played so well with this demographic...

Re: Muslims and the Presidential race
I am sure someone has already posted this, I'm just too lazy to go back digging thru the threads.

I think she nails it right on the head here.

Re: Muslims and the Presidential race
Another HuffPo one:

Marcia Stirman, the head of the Republican Women of Otero County (for what that's worth, lol)...

In a letter published Tuesday in the Alamogordo Daily News, Stirman wrote that she believes "Muslims are our enemies." Stirman told The Associated Press in an interview: "I don't trust them at all. They've sworn across the world that they are our enemies. Why we're trying to elect one is beside me."

I'm just at a loss as to the level of ignorance required to come out with something like that. Not ignorance as in prejudice or offence, but actual plain stupidity.

The last thing the world needs to hear is that people like her are the real Americans.

Re: Muslims and the Presidential race
yeah, this isnt looking like the drawl of the fringe anymore, and so it's actually starting to piss me off.
there's actually organizers in semi-mainstream republican parts not exactly frothing at the mouth but "expressing concern" over an issue that raises a lot more concern about using his blackness to take advantage of baseless yet strong ignorance and prejudice. and how obama is handling it is a lot like charlie chaplin did. he wouldnt say he wasnt a jew not because he was (he wasnt) but because humoring those kinds of questions legitimize them in public discourse.
