Reading this today about the demise of old indie bands such as The Verve and questioning why they are getting so much praise and high gig slots at festivals like T in the Park/Glastonbury. Whilst The Verve and Ashcroft in particular are getting slatted, bands such as Underworld and Portishead are getting praised for still pushing the music creative boundaries.

If anything i'd agree a little and wonder why people are going nuts over The Verve coming back. It is 90's memories flooding back and in my eyes a means to an end for them to reap in a bit of money. I thought they split because they hated each other?

Maybe i'm just being to critical.

Nice article. I don't think you are being too critical, any more than the author is. Bands like Underworld have kept to the road, producing new and innovative sounds over the years whereas bands like the Verve, who were good enough in their day but never in my personal Top 10, disappeared. I will give the new album a listen, no doubt, but my hopes aren't all that high.

Same reason why every band that breaks up makes a comeback...

nostalgia sells...

the new stuff they come out usually is quite bland...the fans at the fests and concerts are their to hear the old stuff.

Bands like UW & Portishead are still flashing creative brilliance.

I loved the Verve especially A Northern Soul and i hope this new album is good and puts Coldplay to shame but i guess my expectations are too high...

I adore A Northern Soul; so far, my only Verve cd. It has such a hugeness about it. And the final track, "Reprise" is just vast - the guitar just weeps emotion. As someone says right at the end.. "that was amazing!"

Again, may be the hype machine but everyone seems to be saying that the new Verve album is fantastic.

I was quite impressed by new single Love Is Noise and look forward to hearing the new album as Urban Hymns does hold a special place in my record collection - I haven't listened to it in ages but when I do hear tracks on the radio etc it does bring loads of memories back which I guess is the nostalgia thing. It was a massive album at the time and almost universally liked - I've got mates who only listen to dance & electronic music yet they all loved Urban Hymns.

And not to stir up a hornets nest but I don't think you can compare the recent output of Portishead & Underworld. Portishead returned with an absoutely fantastic album that probably exceeded everybody's expectations after such a long hiatus whereas the last couple of Underworld albums are nowhere near their early creative highs...

Forget Oblivion With Bells Matt i think this is more about The RiverRuns and live sets not forgetting the sweet broadcasts we get often.

if the most recent Underworld album was AHDO, I MIGHT agree with the hype machine, but I find Oblivion with Bells to be quite fantastic and every bit as good as some of the older Underworld albums.
