Yes that's right, a Coldplay thread. I've noticed all the hate, so let's debate

Personally, I think Parachutes is a great album, showing Coldplay in a less mature state, making sweet music. Lyrics are creative (High Speed) and it all sounds quite honest.

I hardly listen to A Rush Of Blood To The Head but I think most of the songs are pretty good.

I didn't even bother for X&Y, it sucked, period. I enjoyed "Talk" but it is overplayed.

I haven't heard the new one, but I heard it's co-produced by Brian Eno, so I'm gonna check it out soon. I heard the new single and thought it wasn't bad.

Um, yeah, so:

I've played "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" about 20 times since i bought it. Really very enjoyable, probably their best record. Hooks aplenty, some nice repeated themes, a few "hidden" tracks, but concise at 40-something minutes.

Re: Coldplay
heard most of their new album via an overzealous employee in a borders store. it was crap, as usual.
people collectively make a lot of allotments for this band. i think any group with 4 albums who arent unforgiveably bad would have to stumble on a decent hook once in awhile, but i dont see why people think theres some sort of muck they just had to pull themselves from to be good again. if i remember right, parachutes was tolerable at best, a rush of blood had 2 good songs, and everything after was just dumb. this was never a good band. this flimsy gab at "rocking out" and fiddling with your moms "world grooves" compilation proves this again. their big moment back in the spotlight is another amateur flail at icon band respectability and it stinks rotten by this point.

though it was probably the cutest thing ever when i saw a 4 year old see the cd and say "DAD LOOK NEW COLDPLAYS I HAVENT LISTENED TO"

You remember (mostly) wrong
"Parachutes": forgiving "yellow", there are a lot of excellent tracks: "Spies", "Don't Panic", "Everything's Not Lost", "Shiver" to name a few.

"ARoBttH" had at least 7 good songs. People are distracted by the overplayed hits "In my Place", "clocks" and "the scientist". These, i admit, are kidda annoying. For me, there are higher moments in between.

"X&Y" ; i tend to agree with you that it was kinda dumb.

i stand by my overzealous assessment of the new one. Drop the hate, forgive each other.

Re: Coldplay
when I saw the iPod commercial with Coldplay in it, I assumed it was U2. I said, "hrm, another U2 song. Sounds alright."

Then a friend had the album playing in his truck and I said, "So what do you think of the new U2 album?" to which he replied, "oh, I didn't get it." After some more "Whose on First" fumbling I realized that it was Coldplay.

For the record, I loved Parachutes but dislike all the rest that they have put out up until now. This new album is /okay/ but one listen was enough.

Re: Coldplay
Parachutes was an ace album and so was ROBTTH. Then its gone a bit down hill. X&Y was ok and this album is just gash. People are buying in to the marketting of it.

I honestly thought their career was going to play out like Depeche Mode's a little bit, but they've disappointed where Depeche Mode got better and better.
