Re: Notre musique
there are probably much bigger Godard fans on here than me but my personal fav of the few of his that i've seen is Band of Outsiders. I haven't cared to check out his recent stuff although a buddy of mine really liked In Praise of Love...

Just starting Godard? b.miller's right on in suggesting 'Band of Outsiders' -- check that out first, then maybe move to 'Contempt' -- then to his more recent stuff -- 'In Praise of Love' might be a little easier to enjoy than 'Notre Musique' (though I think they're both great).

You'll probably hit a wall with something like 'First Name: Carmen' -- but it is very Godard, in the same sense that 'JLG/JLG' is (and to a degree, both 'In Praise...' and more 'Notre...' are as well.)

Without wanting to sound like a pompous ass, I will say this: once you "get" Godard, you'll never watch another movie the same way. It helps if you supplement the viewing with some reading: 'Godard on Godard' being the best treatment on his methods and goals, but something like 'Film Production Theory' by Geuens (fantastic book) does a good job of introducing some ideas of why a Godard film is the way it is.
