Underworld and Neuromancer?
There's something I've been wondering for a while.
Has anyone ever drawn comparisons between the song "Spoonman" and the novel Neuromancer? I'm almost thinking Underworld was inspired by it. This is just one of those stupid fan-theories, I suppose. The thing that makes me think of this, is "Steppin' Razor," which Molly is referred to in the book. "i'm the spoonman. talks to god. transfusion. penetration." Could refer to Case, his relation to the AIs, and penetrating cyberspace. "stainless steel tokyo" Is quite obvious, since parts of Neuromancer take place in Japan. |

Re: Underworld and Neuromancer?
There's also Gibson's rock and roll duo Lo/Rez in Idoru. But of course that would be his nod to the UW. But its a detail I always wondered about. Does my favorite author like my favorite band? and vice versa....

Quote:
I read somewhere that's actually a nod to Bono and the Edge. They had met up a few times here and there especially in the early 90's... and if memory serves me he was going to be either: a) one of the 'guests' of the Zootv / Zooropa tours (like Salman Rushdie) b) a 'video instellation' either like the vid's of the 'confessionals' or like Lou Reed, when Bono and video Lou would duet Satellite of Love |

Re: Underworld and Neuromancer?
hmm, I was kicking about the name more than the actually characters themselves. I definetly never meant that Rick and Karl were the models for Lo and Rez (esp. since UW was a 3 member band when Idoru was written).
I see the Bono and The Edge comparision to be very fitting though. I'm glad that joethelion mentioned that since I hadn't heard that before. _speaking of U2, boys if you read our posts we'd still love to hear that Mofo mix, especially now that karl mentioned revisiting the tapes_ Last edited by sloff; 09-30-2005 at 05:58 PM. |
