I'm surprised no one has seen this yet. I saw this film a couple days back and had a wonderful time watching it. It was wonderfully written and directed by Brad Bird. I wasn't the biggest fan of The Incredibles, but this film was so much better.

Anyone seen it yet?

I thought the weakest part of this movie was its advertising. I know exactly what everyone thinks about this movie because I thought the exact same thing before I saw it, but I was wrong so you should really give this a chance.

A big thing that might change your mind is that the rats are completely realistic to humans. They have long tails and evil glinting eyes and look scuzzy and ratty. They do talk to themselves but that's kind of a surprisingly small amount of the film. mostly it's about the chefs in the kitchen and one rat who gives a (phenomenal) silent performance through most of the film. There are cartoony elements in there but this isn't Flushed Away.

And after that, it's a charming as hell story with awesome characters and real emotion. It's easily the most emotionally complex movie I've seen all summer. It's just a shame there's still the stigma of animated film only being for kids (even with Pixar... people should be learning by now). I guess the kids might go for the talking rats but the primary story is a pretty mature one.

Can't say enough good about this, really. I urge everyone on here (who watches movies) that's on the fence about it or thinking it looks stupid based on the trailers to give it a shot.

I loooove Incredibles and also the Iron Giant, so I'm really looking forward to seeing another Brad Bird production. But yeah I know what you mean about advertising, I get the feeling that the advertising has failed completely in drumming up any interest in for this film in me and I probably would have given it a miss for being "another cute furry animals animation movie". But reading your comments (and knowing Brad Bird) that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Part of me wants to point the finger of blame of rather lackluster promotional output for Pixar films on Disney. It just seems like it shouldn't be that hard to make a decent, respectable trailer for the films. I wonder if Pixar has some in-house staff that participates and creates pieces of the promotional campaigns for each film?

That said, they're making promotional materials to advertise to kids, not adults, so things are going to be overly simplified, too cute, and cheesy(no pun intended).

no. all I was saying is that I LOLed whenever the rats were all puffed out, (like after the lightning). It made everyone LOL in the theatre.

There is a nice interview with Brad Bird conducted by Elvis Mitchell for the show The Treatment on kcrw. It's only about a half hour, but it's worth a listen.

Just bumping this back up since this was just released over here. Saw it two days ago and I can honestly say it's fucking brilliant! I didn't really know what to expect of it although as expressed in a previous post in this thread, knowing Brad Bird I knew it had to be something special. You know you're gonna get a story with depth, personality and a heart (and lots of fun), without it getting sentimental. The fact that he manages to pull that off when the main characters are rats and the main location a restaurant kitchen in Paris, makes it all the more impressive.

The short film, Lifted, was hilarious as well. Such great comic timing
