Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
While it took me quite some time to get into it, I really fucking love some of the dubstep stuff I've heard so far.
I know where to start: Burial. But then? What records are essential? |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
yay!
for me, Youngsta's mix Dubstep Allstars 2 captures the bare essence of dubstep -- it's meditative, tense, and heavy. lots of DMZ. the set is impeccably mixed so it's a pleasure to listen to, even if there aren't that many tunes. Tectonic Plates is another good compilation from Pinch's label. Pinch also has an album forthcoming on Planet Mu -- i'm pretty sure it will be excellent. you could also search for some online mixes: Dubstep Sufferah 1 + 2 by Grievous Angel, Autonomic Computing by Paul Autonomic, and X Plore H Core or Quantum Lines by Ben UFO (i linked to it in the "other people's mixes" thread). if you like Burial's swing, you might search for the Horsepower Productions proto-dubstep album In Fine Style, which represents the late 90s transition out of 2-step and into dark dubby garage. OH YEAH, and the new 2cd Skull Disco comp is killlllllllllller. wicked eerie & deep tribal bizness from Shackleton (mostly). kind of an anomaly, but essential..... * If you like it deep, dark and dirty: The album 'Degenerate' by Vex'd. Singles 'Bombardment of Saturn' by Vex'd, 'Punisher' by Pinch, 'Honour Kill' by Luke Envoy. I'd keep an eye out for any releases by Bloodied Blade or Distance as well. * I really don't like Kode9's album but his work on singles is great: the remix of 'Find My Way', '9 Samurai', the Junior Boys remix, etc. * Moving Ninja 'Formations' EP (just picked it up). 'Kemancheh' is great ultra-dark stoner tribal shit that lacks the 'clubbing a man with a lead pipe' vibe common to the Vex'd-type stuff above. * The Bug appears to own over all things raggatastical. * I categorize Various Production as the Massive Attack of this whole wave. Many of my favorite tracks I've just heard on mixes and never ID'd. I also am realllllllly reluctant to buy anything that isn't MP3...

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
I'd actually also really really recommend Burial's album (self-titled)
and speaking of MA -> one of the tracks even samples "Teardrop" and yea - you absolutely have to get "Anti-War Dub" I'd also agree that Kode9's album is a bit same-y, and that his remixes of other bands are usually a bit more entertaining and actually - bleep.com has a nice selection of dubstep tracks as far as "Various Production" ... while I still like some specific tracks of theirs, their album as a whole has kind of gotten a bit "eeeh" for me |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
Thanks, will try some of those recommends out. I have the Various Production album and I like some tracks really much but there are also a few on there that are not really my thing.
And another thing worth mentioning, I got the DJ Pinch mix at Mary Ann Hobbs, by BLD's recommendation, and that's one of the nicest fucking livesets I've heard. Really funky stuff, and towards the end there's this big fucking bass track with bongo's in it. RAW |

no, i didn't forget about those tunes. they could have come out in 04/05. stale, half-step that's been done to death already. nothing fresh about any of the tunes except the Kode 9, Burial and the faster of the Skream tunes. all others are your generic wobbling half-step brain dead tunes that have nearly ruined dubstep.
