as far as I know it's complete fiction. I think King picked Crouch End because, at the time, Peter Straub was living there and upon visiting King found it a little confusing or too nice or weird or something. The short story was kind of billed as his "cthulhu mythose" story in the book, i guess just because he has "azathoth rules!" written in graffitti on a wall at one point. and people maybe go insane.
anyway, I'm happy the tv version scared you. it personally didn't do anything for me... But if you get a chance to catch more of the Nightmares/Dreamscapes shows, the one with William Hurt and army soliders is pretty good (think it's called "Battleground" or "Battlefield" something like that).
