Re: Technics: Mk2 or M5G
BLD I pretty much agree with most of your points, and I certainly like a lot of what I hear coming from the digital DJ's (in fact I went to a party on saturday night where ALL the DJs did it off laptops, and did a great job at that, and had tons of stage presence to boot) but personally, it's just not for me. Believe me, I've tried it all. I mostly DJ for myself in my basement, as a de-stresser, as a fun challenge, and all kinds of other reasons. But the #1 reason I prefer the vinyl to the digital is that it makes MUCH more of a physical connection to me than using a computer, and Personally, I react to things on a 'body' level MUCH greater than on the 'mind' level. I work up a good sweat and a good body panic searching through my big stacks of vinyl, and manipulating the turtables and mixer in a way I just can't do while using a laptop + controller. Final Scratch is a little better, but you still miss that frantic flipping thru vinyl feeling. ALSO there is ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING WAY IN HELL that I am going to spend time encoding vinyl. I can't think of anything more boring than that.

It's all horses for courses, though. But really I think it's pretty shortsighted (and a little bit sensitive/defensive) to claim that the pro vinyl folks are just egotists trying to keep the digital dj brothas down.

Also (just to tie this in with my general computer-phobia) I get seriously skeeved out by those slsk chatrooms and trading culture that mp3 usage entails. On the other hand, I love hanging out at the record store, and all my friends who I meet there.

Re: Technics: Mk2 or M5G
excellent points Tyler. I agree with you about the culture of record shopping and the tactile experience of mixing/buying vinyl.

as for the frantic aspect and the stress of playing records. i sweat it out too in Traktor. But this time it's because i was looping an acapella or kick drums from another track and didn't leave much time to mix out of the other track...my heart races, sweat forms on my brow...then i realize i can just loop the outro and extend the mix! couldn't save mixes like that with records.

seriously, it is fun to mix with vinyl, but i believe i can be more creative and a better mixer using Traktor. encoding vinyl is a pain, but listening to those vinyl only cuts on your iPod is a joy beyond joys.

Thanks for everything guys, I finally bought 2 M5G's and a Ecler NUO 3 mixer, however I'm still searching for headphones and pick up.
