On Remixes
There's an aweful lot of them when it comes to bands like Underworld, aren't there? Those cryptic titles in parentheses are all over the place in dance music. It got me wondering how all the stuff gets finalized. Are remixes essentially an open forum, open to anybody willing to submit their take on a particular track? It seemed that way when Orbital held a remix contest on their website several years ago. Or are certain select artists comissioned by the creator to remix material? I suppose both possibilities are likely to be true. In that case, which is more common?

And about Underworld remixes, Does anyone know the origin of some of those weird tags in parentheses they decided to brand much of their remixed material with? Stuff like "14996," "Irish Pub in Kyoto," "Dobropet," and my personal favorite from the Jumbo single, "Vertical Bacon." .... Can somebody tell me WHAT is up with that?

Re: On Remixes
I always assumed the original artist or the record company submitted the song to potential remixers of their choice, asking them to have a go at it.

some record companies submit the remixes, and then let the artists veto the tracks, some companies just send tracks to remixers and whatever they sound like will put them out, just because the remixer has overall say so...

New Order's Ruined in a Day track was remixed by every genre dj at the time, so you had about 8 different versions - one for each type of audience... some were obvioulsy shite...

usually most artists don't have that much say so over who remixes thier tracks, but I know UW work pretty closey with Steve Hall at JBO and they, i believe, choose their remix partners pretty carefully...

its generally who's hot or up coming at any particular time...but if you check who's mixed UW in recent years, King Unique, Futureshock, Pete Heller, etc, all of these were at some time on the Junior Boys Own books...

there are obviously artists out there who do have a pretty big sayso in who remixes their stuff, but most major artists don't have the time or just don't care...as long as it gets thier music out there...

with UW though i think that R&K are pretty in the know about who's hot and who's not, and with the help of britain's number one house label boss picking up on talent all the time, they do tend to get some decent remixers on board...

Re: On Remixes
i always thought the remixer came up with their own remix names i.e. salt city orchestra's vertical bacon vocal mix.

salt city orchestra dont record under that name anymore but they were crazy funsters and i reckon they came up with the name. SCO are good housers. I think they also record as reset. Anyone know what they're doing now - i just found out that paper recordings is alive again.

Is there anyone here that doesnt know what a "vertical bacon sandwich" is!!!?? dont be shy.

Alright. I suddenly have a hunch that it's some lame sexual ennuendo ....

::refers to Urban Dictionary::

.... Well, whattaya' know. Whoever came up with that one must've been too juvenile to have even tasted the stuff.
