i know people are scoffing at the price, but other companies flash and smaller mp3 players also cost way more than their hd based players: 5GB creative micro is $199.99, a 20GB zen touch is $229, a 1GB muvo micro cost around $150.

in a nutshell...

i've gotten bored reading back and forth about what's better and what not. no one cares. if you don't like the iPod, don't buy it... and as for the trend factor - are you going to stop listening to UW if everyone in the world was listening to them, I THINK NOT.

Cheers,

simon, stop trying to pick a fight about a different thread. you're being inflammatory and there is no reason for it. give your comments and thoughts but leave the whole "/unignore" shit alone

personally i agree with you, i dont see the point in convergence until one multiuse thing can do the job as well as each seperate. battery life is a HUGE thing for me about mobiles, and extra, mostly-unused, battery-draining features piss me off after novelty goes away.

Also not much use on a plane; personally I like to listen to music in-flight, but you can't do that on a phone.

Who said anything about sacrificing quality? That's being a bit too presumptuous. Check my first post here:

http://www.dirty.org/forums/showthread.php?t=752

I praised the concept but said I wouldn't go for it yet. Then check what I said about distinguishing devices where quality is the prime factor, and devices where portability is the driver.
I never expected you yo be so absolutist about something; "device convergence is for the idiot gadget freaks". Convergence is driven by the need to reduce weight most often, as far as electronics goes it works when the battery can stand up and when the quality is not compromised.
If the need to combine operations within one device was only for idiots do you think the Swiss Army Knife would be so celebrated?

BTW, if anyone has a Creative Zen Micro they might want to upgrade the firmware because a problem has been fixed that can halve the battery time from 12hrs to 6hrs.

If you have the firmware from before June 06, then the unit would wait 24hrs on standby before auto-shutting down after playing an album. This was changed to 4 hours (version 1.10.02) However, the problem wasnt fixed and it would drain the battery if you left the headphones plugged in it would drain the batteries, and this was fixed a month later (v1.11.01). It took Creative 6 months to release a fix for this. One thing they havent fixed is the poor build quality. The headphone jack still comes loose on new Zen models 2 years after being identified as a common problem.

Its stuff like this that makes me avoid Creative. You get what you pay for. Get the firmware fix here

I know this is sort of off-topic but I thought if anyone has one of these it might help...

I take it all back. Read it and weep.
" Samsung claims it is first to have developed a 16 Gbit NAND Flash memory chip. Built in a 50 nm process, the device sets a new record in the storage density race and could enable memory cards with up to 32 GByte capacity."

BAM!!!!

ya... i have read a few of the articles recently about the monumental leeps in solid state storage... i guess i should have searched and sighted something... anyhow, they just need to figure out speed issues (they are still slower than HD's for doing actual demanding (most computer) work) and we will be set
