iTunes question for anyone technically more able then moi
Quick question:

Computer I used went tits up ages ago and delted all my stuff which saw me slowly put everything back on to iTunes, I did buy some stuff from there such as Underworld To Heal, Venetian Snares and some Four Tet stuff amongst others. Is there anyway of redownloading everything seeing I have a written record of paying money for these MP3's? Or is Apple a bit rotten on this sort of issue?

I believe you can only re-download purchased songs once, such as in your case where your hard drive crashed or whatever.

that's not quite true... their hardware is almost always reviewed to be the best even for windows machines. the software is also the best and most stable that you can get. I use windows, mac and linux for work and am relieved when i get to use the mac. THe iphone software and hardware is just relieving too. cell phones other than the iphone are terrible.

anyways, i can't help about the itunes q...

My guess is you are not a developer. . . Yeah, there are alot of unstable apps on windows, but thats because there are alot of incompetent developers out there. The reason for this? It is easy (read 'cheap') for anyone to begin developing in a windows environment and it isnt long before a novice is in over his head with concepts that arise on any platform, i.e. multi-threading, resource contention, security, transactional processing, data integrity, deployment, versioning, etc. . . If Apple development were as ubiquitous, you would see just as much instability in the mac world. On the other hand, when you know what you are doing and you need to do something complex - for example, distributed systems based on SOA, you can't beat Microsoft. The .Net Framework is hands down the quickest and most flexible application framework available. It costs nothing to begin developing -the framework, documentation and walkthroughs are free. And You can deploy to any device with out involving Microsoft - UNLIKE APPLE.

Apple knows windows is best for distributed development. . . Want proof? You know that nifty device the morons in the apple store use to ring you up on the floor??? Windows CE running on Symbol hardware

IPhone sucks. . . looks pretty but its all fluff. Can't write your own progams for it with out spending tons of money or involving their [cr]App Store. Can't download music over the internet with out being in WiFi and then only via ITunes.

And the platform is gimped! You know whats fun. . . seeing some fool with his iPhone thinking he's all that, spinning and pinching his safari browser.

And then I inquire "can you do this?" . . . .

I pull out my Windows Mobile 6.1 phone. . .
Over cellular data connection, not WiFi, I open a Remote Desktop to my home computer.
I edit a Word document file ON MY HOME COMPUTER and save it.
I then use the phones file explorer and browse to my home computer via a UNC path and open, edit and save, the same document in Mobile Word.
Finally, I go back to the Remote Desktop and open the same file showing the edits I just made using my phone.

Yes its a trivial exercise, but it demonstrates the power of the platform. let me say it again, with emphasis. . . POWER!

IPod sucks. I will simply say that it is ridiculous that when I put things on the iPod it changes the file extracting the metadata to a proprietary database and replacing it with a pointer to said data in the database. What this means is that, in the event of a hard drive failure, to get MY MUSIC back on my hard drive I must install a third party application on my system to recreate the original file. What the fuck is that all about???

In short, Some do work on computers, Some make computers do work.
Windows does the latter better. And isn't that what computers are all about?

Anyway, what viddy said is what you need. Contact them using the iTunes support contacts, explain the situation, and they'll usually let you download the files again. Try this link:

http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/

Click "Purchase(s) - missing" and then click on "My hard drive crashed / all of my purchases were erased".

all developers have the same ideas, priorities, preferences?

That's new to me.

You can always ask for them from a sympathetic dirt.

Honestly I think that Apple is not really fond of the inability to transfer songs from the iPod to the computer either (just as they were famously not thrilled about the DRM restrictions they were forced to put on their iTunes downloads), but the 3rd party software is so easy to use that I don't really see the problem. I have to say the iPod is still the best MP3 player out there in my eyes - most storage, easiest to use, and most reliable. It's iTunes I was never thrilled about, they don't seem to test their upgrade much before they release them. I would probably never buy an Apple computer but I do think the iPods are top of the line.

Yea I was tired of writing a gripe, but now that you mention it...

iTunes craps all over your system, eats up clock cycles, and is a piece of shit when it comes to ease of use while managing your music.

WM player beats it hands down.

jesus - that's some fishy bait you're trolling there bas

I'm glad no-one's taking the bite.

Does anyone even care about OS and platform wars anymore?

If it works for you - good for you.

If you're able to help someone sort out a problem - superb.

But pissing on someone coz they're asking a question - oh yeah - that's real big of you.
