online release explained...?

so, looking at the press, uw are sitting with lots of material, but no record deal. so hats off for the creative thinking - but it still leaves me worried that there's not going to much in the way of "in the hand" touchy-feely product for some time to come.

you get to touch and feel your credit card and your blank cds and your printer......isn't that enough?:D

but for real though, the "soundtrack" should be in stores right?;)

supposedly not...

but if you see the listings elsewhere for new tracks, they're still listed as JBO, but this may be out of habit, most people who make the dj tracklistings out don't seem to know that UWare no longer the JBO label...

unless i am wrong,

but the last time i spoke via email with Steve (Hall) at JBO he said that UW were not gonna be on the Junior Boys Own Label as the contract expired...

i think most of the new material will be on a new UWR label, as is indicated by the cat number for the LBT download...

dude... this absolutely sucks

I mean - isn't that a really bad thing if a band isn't offered a contract renewal?

no it was a mutal agreement...

and most of the more recent international stuff for UW went through V2...

they weren't dropped afaik...

JBO have been a bit quite of late and didn't think that they could do justice to the phenomenon that UW have become (hence the V2 licencing deal worldwide) (JBO are just a mid sized UK house label really, and Underworld are a bit bigger than that... - no offence Steve ;))

although JBO are still knocking out some quality tunage they are by no means as prolific or mainstream as they were when they had Underworld and the Dust (Chemical) Brothers & X-press 2 on their books...

and officially the deal was for 10 years which is pretty much a long time in dance music - that came up, with the anthology - UW were'nt doing anything at that time, neither were JBO and they parted company as far as i understand it....

Re: online release explained...?

Many bands start their own record labels when their initial contracts run out. I think it was more common a while back (1970s, i.e. Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, others), but most recently, Oasis' Big Brother Label.

The fact that UW "don't have a record deal" is not a cause for alarm that record companies don't think their stuff is good enough or something...

and the most important thing is that UW themselves have said they are very happy with their newfound freedom as it enables them to take Underworld into new directions that were not possible while being parterned to a traditional record label.

As long as i hear music from them, i dont' care who releases it. With LBT, a real record label would spend to much time trying to promote it. Now that they have the web freedom, we can get stuff when UW feel like giving us something. And it seems a new download could come soon based on the new things floating around.

Absolutely! R&K even have said that the "buzz" about LBT has been huge, the best in their 25 yrs of recording together...much of that time, they had major-label deals and if i recall, 'second toughest' and 'beacoup fish' were both pretyy hyped before release.

If memory serves correctly, they haven't been with either JBO or V2 for over a year now.

wow. kinda stunned by the decision to part with JBO. It always seemed like Steve Hall was involved in the UW projects to a decent extent, and he pushed for the 1992-2002 anthology to be released. In retrospect, that collection seems like a swan song.

We’re also free of all record contracts as of two years ago, and that’s something we’ve been looking forward to for 25 years.

It appears he still is, the credits for LovelyBrokenThing state 'Compiled by: Steven Hall'
Then again the credits also have it titled as Riverrun Project ...

Re: online release explained...?

well i might now be able to shed some like on the JBO issue...(after officially offending Steve Hall ;) )

JBO is no longer the record label for Underworld, but Steve is still doing the 'musical end of management' things for them, and as such he is likely to be dealing with people like Tongy, who have always known Steve as JBO, so when he sends stuff out its coming from him, and perhaps without knowing the facts of the deal they are assuming JBO are still working with Underworld.

"We’re also free of all record contracts as of two years ago, and that’s something we’ve been looking forward to for 25 years. " KH - Metropolis Magazine 25/11/05

... and I suppose as Steve is basically JBO, they still are in some capacity dealing with JBO, although its unlikely that they will appear on the JBO record label again...

JBO are still going doing more underground stuff, (re- birth is expected soon) ...but Steve is still very much working with Underworld...and should be responisble for sorting out some vinyl releases for the band soon...

as Karl has already stated:

"We will be putting out a 12” for the dance floor—there will be traditional releases."

and to do this i think they need to deal with someone who knows about doing that and i think the man who runs JBO - the best house label ever is still the man for the job...

so i hope Steve accepts my apology for offending him (!) and keeps up the good work, working with the best band in the world....

he's a good guy...(who obviously still reads these lil' 'ol forums ;) )

i won't say a bad thing about JBO not being big / good enough to handle UW again...
