Neat bast from the past! That synth looks like it's seen better days, but as long as its still working and inspiring! Anyone good at spotting its sound on Dubno?
(as an aside, i was pleased to see the trusty CASIO SK-1 "sampling" keyboard in the liner photos to Fatboy Slim's "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" LP. Dang, i used and abused that piece o'crap's 1.5 second sampler for yeaaaaars before computer! It makes some awful noises...check it during the bridge of FBS's "build it up, tear it down"...it's what happens when you plug a guitar in and overdrive the unit!:p )

Hmmm, Im Dutch and share my real first name with mister Vath, but I do not get the joke, nor do I remember the Holiday rap :o .
But about the Frankfurt gig; My fall break is the week after that show, the 12th is a thursday. So I reckon I'll start my holiday two days early :D .
Though really hope U/W play at least around 3 hours, otherwise I might just rather go to Riga/Talinn/Helsinki.

Heh - many many years ago in a previous "lifetime" I worked with John McCauley's wife, and met the great "Them" drummer a coupla times. They had a lovely baby girl at the time. I lost touch with them, as you do. I seem to remember hearing a good few years ago from a former fellow-colleague that they had moved back to Ireland, and that he had died of a severe asthma attack, but I may be wrong on that. I hope I am. He was a great guy. :(

I was wondering where these blogs are too that are slagging on Mr. Smith and Mr. Hyde.
it says 'Biogs' not 'Blogs'
its probably stuff written by fans / reviewers who don't have the whole story...
it prolly includes some of my own site which has certainly incomplete 'truths' about the bands origins... (sorry R&K)
there are loads of bits and pieces of hearsay that go to make up UW's history and origins,
i am certainly gonna go back to my site and redo a lot of the pages when i get the time and only record what i know is the nearer the truth rather than what may be, because unless you were there - its unlikley that what's written anywhere is 100% correct, unless it was said directly by R&K...too many articles and stories paraphrase stuff about the band...
but thats what happens, sadly, and i am certainly guilty of it too...
still i wish i was there back in the day when keyboard suits were all the rage... ;)
i didn't know Darren is touring, will he be in Holland as well?
Darren if you read this: hi from Marlou (tilburg) :)
Karl, have you ever seen this? absolutely amazing art, wearable art! and a big part of their collection is inspired by Underworld's music, if only i had money i'ld be wearing it: http://www.darkstarfashion.com/soundscapes.php

no records but highly recommend these couple of things in sau paulo and rio as well as just getting out on the street and walking (especially sau paulo - what a place!)
1. oscar nieymeyer - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Niemeyer
plenty in both cities to see - the copan building in SP is incredible.
highly recommend a quick trip to brazilia - mind blowing stuff there.
2. roberto burle marxe - every garden I saw was worth the trip, his drawings and their translation onto the paving at copacabana! get a spot high up in one of the hotels and just stare down at it for an hour.
3. http://www.mam.org.br/
4. http://masp.uol.com.br/ - and the garden across the street (the playground in the center is amazing, spent most of my time at the playgrounds of SP with my then 2.5 year old daughter). the building is
by an incredible woman whose name escapes me at the moment.
got it - lina bo bardi - http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/research/publications/hdm/back/16decosta_meyer.html
5. paulo mendes da rocha - the museum of sculpture in SP
http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulo_Archias_Mendes_da_Rocha
yummy place.
could go on and on and you only have a small time - miss the return flight, you'll be very happy. to me sau paulo was an incredible place and rio was one of the most magical landscapes ever. enjoy and do tell what your glass eye sees. :)

"roll up roll up...its the super christmas giveaway! following in the footsteps of retailers all over the world, we're starting our christmas sale before christmas.....
on the other hand, we thought it was perhaps time for a little early christmas present for you all. we have completed the zurich video section and coming soon is the audio from the amsterdam gig in the 2005 audio section.
while you get your teeth into these new additions, we continue to work on some treats from the set of live dates.
we haven't had much of a break since we have been home, keeping busy in the studio and getting set for what's shaping up to be a very busy 2007...bring on the mince pies and tinsel in the meantime."
Very kind and lovely of you! i'm enjoying and looking forward!:)

haha, hogarth.
i just had to take a final on british art from 1700-1860. if art history wasnt my minor i would have been toast since it was a very... arduous class.
but i now i can talk yer ears off about it. we started with him and gainsborough so memory isnt so great but i do recall that hogarth wanted to
a. make money, but also wanted to do history painting. so to support that unprofitable medium he did stories within engravings.
b. tell those that werent aristocratic to stop putting on aristocratic airs
c. teach as many people as possible about what he called the most beautiful line in the world, which was really just an elongated 'S'
man.
i dont know how this benefits me but i like it anyway.

Good stuff! Before i became a full-fledged geologist, i did a double major in art and geology (just to confuse my breain and avoid making up my mind). Once took a class called History of Graphic Arts, which spend a lonnng time on Hogarth.
Engravers, etchers, printers...i have a lot of respect for these guys, because of the tremendous effort of the process of creating. the natural talent's one thing, to make a lovely picture, but to execute each line into wood, metal, whatever, and then have it turn out as a print is tremendously difficult. Many of my etchings were smudge-tastic! :p
p.s. Karl et al., are you fans of M.C. Escher? His engravings will do your head in! I went to the Escher museum while in Den Haag, Holland...seeing the clasics up close was amazing.

ok - well I got those mp3's with some very lucky searching online, and found out about the acetate via a David Bowie message board, either just before or just after the acetate went on sale
now -> the origins of these mp3's are a bit sketchy... they're from one of the following two possible sources
1) the ebay seller, early on - ripped the vinyl onto cd-r. Which makes total sense, as every time you'd listen to it, the sound quality would drop more
2) the mp3's are ripped from another completely different acetate made of the same source material
my guess is that the mp3's are from the first option, as there are absolutely positively no more than a total of 3-5 acetate copies total.
It's believed that David Bowie is the owner of one of them.. and got it back before the final version of "The Velvet Underground & Nico" was released [he even managed to cover (and I think even release) the track "Waiting for the Man" before the VU version was ever released] , and I think I read somewhere that a copy in really shoddy condition was found in a cardboard box in like Maureen Tucker's basement
and I highly doubt that Tucker or Bowie would be leaking mp3's... know what I mean?
{edit}
I should also add that now there are some people online stating that option #2 is where these mp3's are from, saying that the copy on ebay "sounds much better" -> but how would you know that, unless you had both sets of tracks back-to-back... and personally- I wouldn't even believe the seller himself unless I was able to do back-to-back comparissons

Although -what I think counts for most ambience albums- you have to listen to the whole thing to really feel the vibe. But at the point Kobresia came in, it was amazing. Litterally beyond words.

the one before, which, confusingly enough, is the name of the lead-off song on this new one (which is high in the running for best song of 2007 so far) didnt quite do it for me. it was too much of a mess.
but this is the direction i needed them to take to tip the balance and make a record i think is really brilliant.
more lightning bolt and less sax noodling=win.

talk about starting the year with a bang! what happened to january being the month of relative calm and rest, a time to reflect and recover from the excesses of the festive period?!
back from abbey road studios and lemonworld is a veritable hive of activity with people holed up in corners hunched over computers, weird percussive instruments and half-cold cups of tea as new material gets lavished with gifts of love, care and attention. and cold tea.
and we're working on new additions to the archive to keep you entertained in the meantime.

Perhaps Lemonworld isn't as equipped to record certain types of instruments as well as Abbey Road which is one of the best studios on the island. That pic from yesterday had a lot of instruments all over the place. While they may be able to record all of those at Lemonworld, the results will probably be much better when handled by staff that have years of experience with miking instruments. To the best of my knowledge, Rick and Karl probably don't know how to get the best piano sound and since EMI does most of its classical recording there, the piano is almost certainly a better instrument than what they have at home.
King of Snake

why the change? Have things gone sour at Lemonworld?
My guess is that they fell in love with the sound of Studio A's acoustics (woops, I was wrong. Studio 2).
Or perhaps Rick and Karl got copies of Recording the Beatles (http://www.recordingthebeatles.com/) for Christmas and decided to partake in some immitation as flattery. :D

the riverrun projects were a side dish. it's not album material, it's closer to medleys of ideas that dont nearly have the cohesive weight of an album full of fleshed out, soild, stand-alone tracks
i'm not going to pretend that we got an album out of that when it was clearly formatted to be a net only, 192 kbps, teaser of more grounded, physical work to come.

mmm...archive update is a nice. That first track sounds like it has a bit of All These Things fading out of the mix as the track continues. If only we could get a nice audio clip of this track from the zurich show. (Please?)

Oh I have that, I just really love the version of the song from the zurich show from summer of 05 and keep my fingers crossed that it will end up on the archive in video or audio form.
The zurich version of All These Things just has this really great, long intro and mixes wonderfully into dark & long/shake that higher/dark train.

Oooh, that "Shake That Higher/Dark & Long" from Zurich is one of my favorite performances from 2005, hands down. I wish there were a better copy available on the Archive. The audio track in the video is all choppy (as are most of the Zurich videos :()
I think the word "album" is only magic when it's Underworld speaking.

that is the most confusing thing i have ever read. i think monkeys would produce more readable stuff... my brain still hurts!
all in all, the albumn sounds good! i mean, i haven't heard it, but the time-frame for it sounds good :D
maybe Karl will sing Japanese on this new record. That can explain why the new album will be released 5 glacial era's after the last : the translation of UW subliminal & symbolic lyrics takes a lot of time.
