As for the comments themselves then for those that weren't aware it gives them a basic Underworld "roadmap". Something like, 3rd Riverrun--Soundtrack--UWAlbum--More Work with Yared--other stuff.... kind of thing. I don't get the impatience of people to say "where's the album?" though. In the last few months there's been way more than an albums worth of new material and I've seen the band live half a dozen times (yes I know Underworld haven't toured certain geographic areas, but there have been live recordings filtering out in various forms featuring yet more new material not released).

yeah a new album is in order...
Stimps, i have to disagree a bit though about having material given to us...
yes, we have been blessed: with some web projects, and live materials and lots of live contact, but an UW album was kinda promised a long time ago and has taken on a back burner role...what with the soundtrack and the RRP's
I for one can't wait until the Yared Soundtrack project materialises, plus the book of photo's, plus more RRP's, but what most people know and love about UW is their commercially released albums (and releated singles) and i think that we are right to want this to come as soon as possible...(meaning when its possible for UW to do it, not straight away, unless it is ready ;) )
if UW had said that they weren't going to release a new album then fair enough, but they have always intimated that an album was coming...
i don't wanna rush the guys...but even Karl admits its about time...and they must have enough decent stuff out of 180 pieces to make some quality albums with...
so i'm not complaining, but i prefer the Album's and Singles to anything else...the RRP is great but...
bring on the album!!!

Well as much as we want the album to come, they will decide when. Honestly, them intimating the coming of a new album, I don't know about that. They might have dropped hints of working on it, but not really that it's coming soon.
And further more, I really don't understand why you're saying "bring on the album!!!". Be thankful for what you've got now (and that a LOT, Riverrun projects (+ those that have yet to come), web broadcasts and everything.
UW themselves are so happy and excited they can release all the material they'ld like us to hear through UWlive.com, without any intervention from a recordcompany that binds them to limiting contracts!!!
We get to hear things that would never have been released through a recordcompany...
Plus they finally are selling their own recordings when they play live.
:D
And indeed the webcasts and all that!
They share their journey with us, in a way no regular album can compete with, well, that's my opinion anyway.
Would you rather have an album every 2 years or so, and no contact, no webcasts, no information through a diary-website? ;)

i am thankful,
but like i said i just think that what most people would like from Underworld is a full complete album, and they have suggested that one is coming for quite a while... if you're working on an album, surely its intimation that one is coming...and i for one think that the RRP's have come from creating music for an album, these are the bits not deemed album worthy.
I know R&K have been very busy of late, and i'm not expecting one this week ;) but we haven't had an UW album for 3 and half years and one is due...
its all very well releasing download work, but i kinda feel that it is just a teaser, and not the real thing until i see some stuff for sale on the shelves of my record store...and album is still where its at, and one is due...when?
well, who knows, i just say bring it on.... when it comes :)

no i'd expect that as well ;)
at least KH is doing what he loves, its easy being in some bands, make an album every couple of years and no contact, yeah for sure...but KH is a full on writer, communicator, and lover of his art...and he and Rick are able to function with their fans much more so than most groups....
but its only been recent years that we've had all this luxury...
the web is opening new doors every week, and we are being spoiled, because K&R like the technology, but lets not forget the bread and butter of what UW are and thats making (& selling) music, and still the best way to get that across to the widest audiences is through an album...
just because we have all this lovely new stuff doesn't mean we don't want an album as well...all i am saying is that an album has been hinted at and mentioned for some while now, and nothing's appeared...
if KH had said - 'thats it' no more albums then i'd be fine and accept that, but the fact is, one is due, maybe not scheduled, and all i am saying is 'bring it on', because thats what KH said today...an U/W album is 'in order'
i'm all for letting the boys do what they want, when they want, and giving us this lovely new stuff via differing formats, but whats wrong with wanting an album as well...?

We are in a privileged position as far as Artist-Fan communication is concerned. It really doesnt bother me right now about an album materialising this year or early next. If little bits of material keep dribbling out (as they have done) then its better than The Stone Roses disappearing for 5 years and then coming back with a Led Zeppelin album, or The Happy Mondays snorting crack on a caribbean island and then churning out the mediocre "Yes Please" (no thanks!) album.

im very pleased with the RRP, and im loving the bootlegs from the recent (yet small) tour. im excited about the soundtrack, and the new band about to form. i love that UW gives us so much and for that i thank them.
but...
there is just something to be said of an Underworld album. yes, Stimp, we are in a priveledged position, but we are also super fans. there are friends of mine that arent devoted to scouring every resource possible to get the latest listen. they are the people that want the new album, new singles. i tried to convince them that there is tons of new material out there to be found, but they just said that they'd wait for the new album. after awhile i realized that we were both right. to a superfan, RRP sounds complete, sounds great. but to a regular fan, it sounds like experiments that are leading up to something. to a superfan, the little segues between tracks at the Electraglide Tokyo festival are just-as-good-if-not-better than a studio album, but to the regular fan, they dont exist because they didnt spend DAYS tracking down mp3s of it on ebay.
so i can see it both ways. luckily im in the boat with the uber fans and have gotten a listen to most of the new material, but i can still see it from the casual fans point of view. another UW album sounds like a great idea to me right about now :P

Yet... not to rain on the parade too much, but we knew the next album was aways off, like early 2007, for a while now. Karl didn't say it's coming tomorrow; he just states the next UW will be after the soundtrack and before some future collaboration with Gabriel.

Further Info:
The "Dark & Long" from Sophia, is really Dark & Long and then Shake That Higher so we get 2 tracks in one 11min video. The Tokyo video appears to have Karl saying "Tokyyyyooooooooooooo!" rather energetically and then cuts to a 3minute edit of Two Months Off. Could be the general cast and crew screening + their select few friends to see the work they all contributed on and then to gauge reactions as they head into the next phase of post-production, ie. more cutting, tightening things here and there, and just making things tiddy before it gets screened to a larger more PUBLIC audience.
I could be wrong in all of this, but generally, when the score is being completed that means the picture is Locked and the necessarily changes and cuts have already been made.
Checking out the production credits over at the imdb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443456/companycredits) yeilding a bit of insight, but it appears to be a largely 'independent' production outside of the major studios aside from market distribution to the various regions of the world.
Once again, I might be, and probably am wrong on a great deal of this so if any of the parties involved would care to comment that would probably help clarify. I'm sure a press release and some more production info will be coming down the pipe in a matter of weeks and months.
One last thing. On that link above to the production it listed Miramax as a production company and The Weinstein Co. as a distributor. Seeing as how Harvey and Bob have split from Miramax and Disney I would which entity is involved and to which extent, seeing as how the imdb isn't always the most reliable source of information from time to time.

"Breaking and Entering was excellent. I submitted a longer comment to IMDB that should be posted in a few days, but here is the gist: Minghella's direction is excellent. He is an acute observer of human relationships. He finds the right pace and tone for the story. The acting is top-notch all around. Jude Law gives his best performance. Minghella always brings out the best in him. Juliette Binoche is sublime and Robin Wright Penn is radiant. Rafi Gavron is outstanding and Vera Farmiga and Martin Freeman are very funny in smaller roles. The cinematography is stunning and the score was very modern and elegant. It was a rough cut, and I can't wait to see the finished film when it gets released."
"Minghella's got a winner here. Will it receive any Oscar nods? I think Binoche certainly deserves one, though the performances are great across the board. Vera Farmiga is the crowd pleaser, though, when it comes to the movie's humor. She plays a Romanian prostitute whose frank dialogue with Jude Law's character, Will, had the audience in stitches. Her performance is not to be missed."
"I think if the recent AMPAS trend for smaller character dramas continues, I could defiently see Breaking and Entering nominated for Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Supporting Actress (not sure about the placement though, both Robin Wright Penn and Juliette Binoche have about the same amount of screen time. It could be Penn-lead Binoche-supporting or vice versa. A case could be made for each.), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Score. But with an August release date it could very well be ignored."

Karl, a question.
What do you think of the upcoming movie Snakes on a Plane?
if you hadn't heard of this movie yet, what would you say to a movie starring Samuel L Jackson who plays an FBI agent, hired to transport a key witness in an important trial, only to find that an assassin has let loose hundreds of snakes on this airplane in an attempt to kill this witness?
here are a couple links to help make you an informed decision on your anticipation for Snakes on a Plane:

Haha, I'd heard that the makers really wanted to call this film something else, but Jackson said that he would quit if they didn't call it 'Snakes on a Plane,' and so they caved in. A truly awful name indeed :D

Some of the vids included in today's update are named incorrectly. In order for them to work properly, you'll have to unzip them as usual, then name the unzipped file to a .mov extension before you are able to play them. (e.g. "Pearls girl sophia 05" to "Pearls girl sophia 05.mov")

I've noticed big differences in the quality of the audio on the Sofia videos. Some of them sound just SO bad compared to the others. Although I am appreciative of the releases, I feel it would be good to have some consistency. Here is a run down so you know what I mean:
Born Slippy: 44.1khz, 16bit, Stereo
Lenny Penne: 44.1khz, 16bit, Stereo
which is great, but then we have:
King Of Snake: 16khz, 16bit, Mono
Dark & Long: 16khz, 16bit, Mono
Pearl's Girl: 16khz, 16bit, Mono
Is there any chance that we can get these videos reissued in the same quality as the other two?

Unforgotten by Marshall Watson is pretty slick!
the new James Holden mix of Madonna - Get Together is ace
new Junior Boys disc has moments of absolute beauty
Booka Shade - Movements is phenomemal straight through
new dj set by me + professor isn't too shabby either...see if you can spot Cool Kids of Death, Like A Motorway, Schmoo Steppin Razor and Zion Train remixes along with yaz, new order and a slew of deep and minimal grooves!

been hearing:
Junior Boys - so this is Goodbye - as detatched and hurt and beautiful as the last one
Boxcutter - oneiric - sublime atmospherics at play here. gorgeous.
Buffalo Daughter - Euphorica - a nice progression from 'new rock' and less 'I' involved. which is neither a good or bad thing, just saying they're baring the teeth a little more. more layered, more funk'd rock. always eccentric.
Brendon Small - Home Movies - CD that came with the dvd of all the songs that were ever on the show. you ever see the show? the single best thing to ever grace television.
Broken Hearted Dragonflies - cant say i'm "grooving" to this, but it's worth a mention. when large groups of dragonflies come to mate, the males that inevitably get left behind increase their mating call to a higher and higher pitch until their chests literally burst open. this is the sound of that. it sounds like robots pushed to a point until something goes noticeably wrong and then it sputters out. now imagine about a hundred of that. quite a trip.
spank rock - yoyoyoyoyo - scott called this the album of the year back in februaury. well, he's not far off.
technasia - popsoda - we all know about that by now.

Seconded! The guy's just amazingly talented... the songs are all sorts of styles, with witty lyrics. Not sure if they're on the DVD's disk, but he wrote a song called "Don't Put Marbles in your Nose" that has to be heard to be believed. Also, a rock opera about Franz Kafka. Just hilarious! The show wasn't bad, either...lotta heart for a cartoon.

Whoah! That poem caught me right in the guts on today's page. I often defend youths. I hate doing it, not cos they don't deserve a good defence, or because they are difficult to deal with, but because the entire Youth Justice system is stacked against them - who will believe the word of a kid against an adult? - and it breaks my heart to see a kid of 15 with his hoodie and his baseball cap coming to the end of the road in terms of Youth Offending Programmes, who has fallen into the system and can't get out of it... and to hear him say to me "Yeah, well...I'm pleading guilty even though I didn't do it cos I will get found guilty anyway. I don't give a fuck if they send me to Feltham. I've got some mates in there - they're doing alright."
Well their mates in Feltham are not doing alright. They will come out scarred, abused and tormented, and hating the "system" that put them there even more than before. The only difference is, for most of them, it will just have made them "harder".
Someone said something very cynical to me the other day in the Family Courts - "you need to take good care of the clients in these dysfunctional family cases - the drunken fathers, the beaten mums. Cos you will end up with their kids as criminal clients one day".

hmmm, seriously, the people encoding this stuff need to get their act together.well, im sure there are other factors at work here.but yes if they need someone to do this stuff for them then I do this kind of thing all the time and I volunteer my services :) i do seem to be the one noticing these anomalies...
(guys: just email me at steve at dirty dot org ;))
It surprises me that noone seems to notice those ugly gaps between tracks caused by the inferior MP3 codec they use (itunes?).
The Blue Mountain gig is a good example for this. The track transition are completely screwed up. Switching to something better would also improve the perceived quality noticably.
I suggest the LAME codec (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME), which proved to be the best MP3 codec available. (something like 'lame -V5 --vbr-new [input] [output]' would do what they want --> ~130 kbps). A mac version is available, too. With a gapless player like foobar2000 or winamp, there will be no gaps anymore!
For the Riverruns, they could reencode their material with '-V2 --vbr-new', which gives about 190-200 kbps on most material (it is VBR). People moaning about the quality of the Riverruns should be satisfied with that.
For videos, i recommend x264 (http://x264.nl/), which is considered to be the best video codec so far. In combination with the easy to use GUI MeGUI (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96032) and the free Nero AAC encoder (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=44275&hl=), this thing is better than everything else. 160x120 at 10 fps hurts my eyes! IMO 320x240 at 25 fps without much artifacts plus good sound quality should be easily possible.
but yes if they need someone to do this stuff for them then I do this kind of thing all the time and I volunteer my services :) i do seem to be the one noticing these anomalies...

Boys and their toys. :p
We need to bear in mind that it is that very same geeky attention to detail that has enabled us to have some fantastically good quality "unofficial" free stuff over the past year - *cough rtsr cough*. Without these kinds of skills we wouldn't have the lovely Dirty Summer Compilation either. So in that respect I think it is a little unfair to expect those very same people to have lower standards when it comes to sound/video quality simply because it is an official release. I don't think UW would get the hump as a result of this.
And it keeps them out of mischief. Mostly. ;)
There have been far far worse moaning sessions on here in the past, yet the band know we are grateful for everything they do. I am very grateful for all the free stuff we have been given over the past year. The Misterons Mix is a delight. Thank you :)
