Bloody internet
After more than a week of my internet working when it felt like it, I now have virtually full functionality except for some pages that refuse to load - eg. UW live (!), and windows Messenger that blows raspberries at me every time I try to log on.

Dunno what to do about this any more, frankly, other than throw my laptop through the window.

We run a home network wified through a small business server. Any suggestions welcome as I think my bloke is all out of ideas now.

Re: Bloody internet
Sorry about the probs, Janie...

i've had a pretty slow computer/internet for awhile now. The home laptop is ~4 yrs old, but the drive's mostly empty and the security up-to-date. Not sure why, but the virtual memory's been struggling.

Hope someone with some tech knowledge can help you out. Fight the urge to toss it until you know what's really the matter.

Re: Bloody internet
when in doubt, re-install your OS.
the insides of lappies get chocked full of dirt etc after several years.
that can't be good either.

Re: Bloody internet
I assume that the problem is only on one machine? you have no problem getting to pages from your server???

confirm the source of the bottle neck (is it in your net or the net routing of your ISP?) from the command line run
tracert {ip address/url to web site}
does it reach the site? at what address does the tracert bog down? talk to ISP tech support (yeah, fun, I know)

is the server your dns? server running nat/ras?
problem occur in all browsers?

from the command line run:
ipconfig /flushdns
clear your internet document cache

dump your temp files

Re: Bloody internet
Odd that only certain pages are refusing to load.

At the risk of asking the obvious, have you tested UW live in a different browser?

Would also be good if you could get another machine there to test it on.

Re: Bloody internet
Thank you all for your help.

Hubby bit the bullet and did a full restore from scratch on the server last night and... fingers crossed.... that seems to be working so far. I am actually able to log in to MSN without it crashing round my ears for the first time in ages.

BasIAm - Yeah, we had tried all that. It wasn't just my lappy but also the other wified puter we have here - everything directly wired into the server was functioning just fine, so it clearly had to be something to do with wifi/firewalls or some such. I am so not a techy person, but thanks for the suggestions.

have you reset your router. . . not just a power off, but a full reset? this means you will have to reconfigure it.

checked for a firmware update from the mfgr?
