Chavez the Musical
any opinions on the Oliver Stone movie "South of the Border"?

I think its hilarious that no one in the south american countries where it was filmed and comprise its subject matter are seeing it.

Quote:
Stone went on a whirlwind tour of Latin America to promote South of the Border, yet in the 12 days following release it grossed only $18,601 (£12,547) on 20 screens in Chávez's Venezula, according to Global Rentrak.Free screenings in rural areas did, however, attract crowds: some 1,300 people are said to have sat in front of mobile screens in the towns of Vargas and Guárico. The low turnout is said to be in part down to Chávez not having officially rallied people to go and see it. Last year, Michael Jackson film This Is It became the country's highest grossing documentary, earning $2.1m.
Quote:
The film flopped in Venezuela, however, in part because of a local cultural tendency to reject excessive flattery, says Ricardo Sucre, a professor of political science at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. "The everyday Joe doesn't like that kissing up. In the Venezuelan context, excessive flattery generates rejection," he says.

Or maybe its because he's basically destroyed the middle class for the sake of temporary gifts to the poor along with permanent gifts to the wealthy

I mean i'm no fan of banana republic imperialism, john foster dulles, or the inexcusable crimes american corporations have committed through back door government channels.

I just think it would be interesting to see a documentary of Chavez by a Venezuelan small business owner raising a family.

Re: Chavez the Musical
Seven years ago I sat down and watched The Revolution will not be Televised and frankly was blown away by what appeared to be a great victory against the bully. Subsequent demonisation by hawkish US conservatives just made the lights seem even lighter and the darks darker (didn't Pat Robertson propose assassinating Chavez at one point?) and it was a turning point in how I viewed not just Latin America's quest for independence from the outside world but also the way the US operates.

Innocent times.

If everything I've since heard and read about the country's leadership is true and not just propaganda (and even so I'm sure much of it is), well... that's another one to chalk up to experience.

I'll try and catch this film all the same.
(Maybe I'll make a weekend of it)

Re: Chavez the Musical
Yeah Decks, I'll definitely try to see it myself. And probably like it. And probably feel a lot of sympathy for the protagonists.

I just resent hollywood. the whole "i have seen the future and it works" schtick from champagne socialists whose interface with the real experience of living under these socialist leaders is cohiba cigars and suck up social events.
