multi format releases for underworld
ok,
i don't know if any of you like bjork, and of course she has the fanbase to release special multi format releases (4 of them for each single off of 'volta').. so what do you think, could underworld do it? basically what bjork has done is the following.... for each song, say 'earth intruders'.. it comes in a box with several colored sleeves.. and the following: ------------------------- 2x12" with mixes 1 cd singles with mixes (may contain more than the vinyl) 1 dvd single with the video, and some mixes/tracks in 5.1 now granted, it probably costs more than buying each one separately, but its a great looking package and makes it convenient for collectors to get everything in one place.. perhaps underworld could do something like.. (EXAMPLE ONLY)..not real ------------------------------- 2x12 beautiful burnout 1 cd single with ALL the beautiful burnout mixes 1 dvd sngle with video and/or extra tracks, book of jam etc.. all in a nice box, with graphics etc... and maybe a code,to download extra stuff from the shop? exclusive tracks, etc? hmmmmmmmmmmm..... later -1 Last edited by negative1; 04-08-2008 at 10:08 PM. |

Re: multi format releases for underworld
I also prefer physical releases, CD/DVD formats offer more convenience over vinyl for me (not that I have anything against vinyl) and I also prefer lossless formats over MP3.

Re: multi format releases for underworld
For me an audio format has to fulfil several criteria:
- It must not deteriorate after multiple listens. So this excludes all forms of analog media like vinyl. I can't align my perfectionism with the concept of analog storage media. When I rip the media to my PC I want to be sure to get bit-identical copies every time. - It must give me the freedom of transcoding it to any other format and the freedom of listening to it in the way I like. Thus I wouldn't pay for an MP3 file. Not because it sounds any worse (which it usually doesn't) but because I can't transcode it into another lossy format without possibly introducing nasty transcoding artifacts. When I want to have MP3s for my DAP I just transcode my lossless CD-image. Also no DRM for me if I can't crack it. - This is maybe nostalgic, but I simply like to hold something physical in my hands. - Artwork is also nice, I like when artists experiment with the artwork (UW --> RiverRun slide shows). However, I wouldn't have a problem when an artist says that just the music is the 'end product' (like Autechre do). Boxsets are also very nice except when they are just created in order to rip off money from fans. So my order of preference: CD (fulfills all criteria) > lossless digital formats like FLAC >>>>> MP3 if it's an MP3-only-release like the RiverRuns.

Re: multi format releases for underworld
what i generally would like too see is the release of any format on one single day available to all nationalities...
i.e. not split releases, no singles with Japan / US / UK exclusive tracks, no iTunes exclusives its ok for UW to release material exclusives through their own site (UWLive) but for the Japanese to get exclusive tracks on commercially released cds is plainly wrong (i know the reasons for doing it, but it does not to make it right) just release the music to all of the worldwide fans on one day - whatever format it is and don't issue 'promo only' mixes unless they intend to be issued on uwlive or some other site (at a future date) - if a mix is commissioned and made available to dj's who can't be arsed to play it (most sell them on anyway, so they can make a few quid on ebay) don't release exclusive dj mixes - if they end up moaning, tell them to go out and buy bloody records - they get these promos for free, ffs its the fans that want multiple remixes not the bloody dj's - they usually only play the radio edits anyway! so one day release, internationally, thats all i want - format for me is not the issue

Re: multi format releases for underworld
further to my other post
to be fair to Underworld... they have made most releases pretty much available to all - everyone here has a computer and can access mp3's now and we do get a great deal through the uwlive site over the years - loads of unreleased stuff... its just things like the loads of birds exclusive and other region specific stuff (ancient phat farm coat too...) i really think all fans want is to hear the music and enjoy it - without having to fork out extra for releases in other territories... (commercial reasons i know, i know....) its all good really, though

the interesting thing to me, about vinyl, is that for me, it qualifies with every other point you make.. well, that is, i get it, and convert it to wav, and then never play it again.. usually, you get much bigger and better artwork...the sound quality is just as good (in a different way, [i compared the OWB cd to vinyl earlier])..... you still get a physical product, there is no drm...(ok, you need a turntable).... although the price is sometimes higher(especially for albums, i paid a HUGE amount of money (over US$80 for the 4xLP underworld 1992-2002 boxset)....finding older vinyl is very cheap, unless it is rare, i got a near mint 'mmm skyscraper' for about US$10....try finding that on CD singles.. so don't write off vinyl.....it is STILL very important.. especially when there are so many vinyl only tracks, and rare songs that you will never find anywhere else, in any format (mother earth/the hump mixes, etc).. later -1 |
