we move onto 2 more non album tracks.

were these experiments?

anyways, they came with the generic JBO logo
of a guy eating a record for the cover.

and it was also a cd-single.

some of these tracks appeared on various JBO compilations,
and also on various other compilations.

spikee was played live a few times...and possibly
dogman go woof.

-----

spikee is interesting in its uses of repeated vocals,
whereas dogman go woof is another epic instrumental
track that takes a lot of time to build up, and work
into a interesting pace and beat.

Thanks, negative one, for attempting this project!

Spikee is always on my list of favorites, for the sole reason that it took so long for me to obtain. I'd heard it in fan mixes for awhile, finally got the WaxTrax MasterMix version (1999) in 2002 or so, then the UW 1992-2002 compilation. It's always fun to track down specific songs. I guess i have all the UW rarities at this point, save a few remixes...

Bring on the next album with a slew of rare B sides and Italian remixes!!!

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
we now move onto the next 'set' of remixes, from the same
first album, but in 1994

set 2 - 1994
================================================== ====================

series 4
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Underworld: Dark & Long
[Jun 1994] single

CD5: 1994 UK (Junior Boy's Own; JBO 19 CDS) [slim jewelbox]
1 4:08 Dark & Long (hall's mix) [uk cd label: "...edit"]
2 9:51 Dark Train (edit)
3 5:52 Most 'ospitable
4 20:02 215 Miles
----------------------------------------------------------------------
this release had a split 2x12" release with 2 of mixes of dark and long,
on them.

the cd release was also split with this version being the main release,
and a much longer EP later.

this version highlights an edit, a longer instrumental, and some ambient
tracks.

================================================== ==
1) dark and long (halls edit) - a very cool but brief edit, which probably was
never played on the radio

the original was a sweeping, dark and moody track. this maintains most
of that feel, with the laid back take on the lyrics, but abbreviates the
long instrumental segues

2) dark train - another classic hallmark song from underworld, the buildup
of samples, beats, and sounds meshes into a hypnotizing sound collage.

although, it has been played to death, it still earns its place in almost every
live concert they have. not a favorite of mine, but i don't hate it either.

some of the live takes on it are actually pretty cool

3) most ospitable - a rather short and strange collection of ambient sounds,
voices, and dream like variations. was used on the video collection also.
has some nice soothing synth chords throughout it. might it have another
song on the album?

4) 215 miles - another standout epic track, at nearly 20 minutes. this upbeat,
rolling soundtrack, to what appears to be another journey into sound. cryptic
samples, oblique sounds, and uptempo percussion guide you through each
phase of this sound.

effort : A
execution A
================================================== ====
a must have release from underworld.

although limited by the amount of time on this single, this dark and long EP
is a great buy. great artwork, with the minimalistic black and white.

4 standout tracks, pave the way for a blueprint of many of the following
releases that would come out from them.

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
Spikee's been a live staple since 2005:

http://uwlive.rowla.com/gigs/bySong/32

I think Dogman Go Woof got a fair amount of playtime in the early days, but we don't have a lot of recordings from then.

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
Disc 5
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Underworld: Dark & Long
[Jun 1994] single
CD5: 1994 DK (April Records; APR 002CD) [full jewelbox; nice silvery ps]
1 4:07 Dark & Long (7") [hall's mix]
-------------------------------------
an excellent but short edit of the song.
exactly the same as on the UK release.

2 20:12 Thing In Book ["Thing In A Book"]
-----------------------------------------
another brand new track. how this relates to dark and long,
i'm not sure. but it is definitely an epic track.it was
included as the B side to the Chapter 2 12"

this is where underworld shines, when coming out with
tracks that morph, and mutate, and change during the
different parts. who else can create this kind of
sonic landscape?

an interesting nice long bouncy, mildly ambient
track, that floats up and around a cool bassline,
and keyboard chords that bubble up and around.

very relaxing.

3 17:53 Spoon Deep
------------------
it was included as the A side to the Chapter 2 12"

a much harder trancey sounding techno song.
lots of beats that coalesce into a shimmering
tower of electro keyboards that all merge together
while the percussion keeps the pace going.

several breaks, and introductions of new sounds
keep it fresh for the duration of the track.
lots of drum solos, and keyboard solos too
that layer on the sound.

4 11:30 Dark Hard
-----------------
yet another variant in the 'dark' series of tracks.
this track is CD only as far as it seems.

another rollocking electro trance track. midtempo
but picks up the pace as the song goes on.

not as much variation throughout the song,
but still has many interesting percussive parts
to listen to. there are glimmers of vocals peering
out of the song.

and yet you do hear some of the samples from
the original dark and long around the 8 minute mark.

5 10:28 Dark Train
-----------------
again, the same version as previously released on
the prior UK single.

6 8:47 Burts
--------------
one final track, that was included as the b-side to
the original Chapter 1 12".

a very distinct sounding instrumental. does not relate
to any of the 'dark' songs before it. more of an upbeat
experiment with the keyboard chords, and percussive
elements going back and forth.

really picks up the tempo halfway through it. and you
can hear the samples of 'damage' and other sounds in it also.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

effort : A
execution : A

another must have release from underworld

the artwork is similar to prior ones,
but more of a gray and black tone.

almost like its own mini album in itself.
lots of great tracks, and experiments that
set the tone for one of the greatest EPs
they have ever released.

expensive and hard to find, but worth it.

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
the next single up is cowgirl.
another massive song that they play at all their concerts.

the uk/europe got this version
===============================
1 8:55 Cowgirl (long album version)
2 11:45 Cowgirl (irish pub in kyoto mix)
3 6:25 Cowgirl (winjer mix)

while the US got this cool ep
=====================
1 Dirty Epic (Dirty Guitar Mix) 10:00
2 Dirty Epic (Dirty Mix) 11:14
3 Dirty Epic (Album Version) 9:52
4 Cowgirl (Irish Pub In Kyoto Mix) 11:45
5 Cowgirl (Winjer Mix) 6:25
6 Cowgirl (Album Version) 8:57
7 Rez 9:55
8 River Of Bass 6:26

i will only discuss the cowgirl tracks:
==========================
1 8:55 Cowgirl (long album version)

what else can be said about this track? you've heard it
a thousand times and it's still good. from the 'everything, everything'
line, to the other lyrics, the drums, the beats,
make it an essential techno trance classic, that stands
tall to this day.

2 11:45 Cowgirl (irish pub in kyoto mix)
another interesting upbeat take on the song. though they
never played it live. it's a very cool and interesting version
with new beats, and strains of the original in it. you can
tell where it came from, and the extended time gives it
a lot of room to develop. very well done.

3 6:25 Cowgirl (winjer mix)
quite a different take on the song, downbeat and ambient.
with strange voices and sounds throughout. like the 'dark'
series of mixes for dark and long. this takes the song
in a completely different direction from the original.
all in all, still very well done.

overall:
effort : A
execution : A

another great single with black and white minimalist artwork,
that fits in with the theme of the album.

the hits just keep coming and don't stop.
another essential release.

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
Underworld: Dirty Epic
[Dec 1994] single

CD5: 1994 GER (Junior Boy's Own/Intercord; 893.019 / DMD INT 001)
[Oct 94]
1 9:46 Dirty Epic
2 10:00 Dirty Guitar
3 11:14 Dirty

Add this:
----------
+ 4 4:10 Dirty Epic (jed the fish edit)
+ 5 7:37 dirty epic (dirty guitar fade)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

the next single up is dirty epic.

what an appropriate title for the song. epic.

1) dirty epic.

that says it all. from the moody samples, to the haunting voice.
this is one of underworld best songs.
a long song that takes you on a very interesting trip.
meeting strange people. doing strange things.

majestic keyboards. stabbing guitar riffs. rhythmic beat.
muted and distorted voices all blend into a dream like state.
and karls hushed vocals are perfect.

the remixes are interesting, but the original is the best.

early in their career they would play it, but then they
stopped for awhile. now they seem to play it more often.

the lyrics are amazing, and their are many lines that
are still quoted today.
'the light it burns my eyes'
'big screen satellite'
'i get my kicks on channel 6'

2)dirty guitar is another song that is well known.
in fact it's probably one of the most played songs
besides 'born slippy.nuxx'. a very cool instrumental
with hypnotic keyboard chords, and nice long intro
that goes into a driving beat. muted and distorted
voices are also present.

when they play it live, they tend to speed it up.

a great, and classic song.

3) this song is almost never played, and its a very cool version.
not really related to the original though. you hear elements of
the song in it. but it's mostly just a lighter instrumental
take on it. probably related more to dirty guitar than anything.
hints of vocoders, and a deep bass line. they keyboards kick in
the middle and also the guitar stabs at the end. parts sound
like they might have come from mmm skyscraper. but thats just
the sound of the album.

another great remix.

4) the radio edit is a very cut down version of the song
made for US radio, by jed the fish, a dj in LA.
good, but too short to get into.

overall:
effort : A
execution : A

another great single with black and white minimalist artwork,
that fits in with the theme of the album.

this ends the dubnobasswithmyheadman era, and 1994
which is one of the most creative of their career.

they will return with a few non-album tracks, and
some of the biggest hits of their career next.

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
i know it's been 4 years since this started..

but i'm going to reboot it...and expand it.
to include the albums, and a few more things.

with links, videos, and...... charts.....

i did it for 'new order' singles of the 80's..
--------------------------------------------------------
http://forums.neworderonline.com/def...g=posts&t=3228

yes, underworld, are doing similar things, with 'world of underworld', playlists, etc.

but i want to focus on just the era of uw mk2 1990-2000, and include side projects,
lemon interupt tracks, but NOT remixes of other artists, etc, that's already been
covered in many other projects.

i will get an overview ready, and start working on the relevant charts, which will include other
relevant electronic(a), techno, type of groups also...

will be a fun ride.

its just a faded version of dirty guitar, like this:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Juni.../release/43938

it was titled dirty epic (dirty guitar) on some releases, but its not a new track.
