Sorry that's 01-31 and not 01-21.

Quick Translation.

In November 2007, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde were unable to participate in the Gent "grand mass" of I Love Techno, at the time of the release of the excellent Oblivion With Bells. This evening, Underworld will be in the Ancienne Belgique that has been converted to a dance floor. The title of the album is somewhat tongue-in-cheek: the Brits are still hyperactive after 27 years of activity and are in no way ready to waltz away into being just a memory.

Even the most dancable of the tracks on this CD are bathed in a laid-back atmosphere. Is that always your state of mind?
- At the end of our contract with V2, Rick and I decided to finance our activities ourselves. This real freedom has lasted for 5 years now. We have launched a series of broadcasts on web radio, playing music by a bunch of other people, jammed with others, worked on two film soundtracks and released some new material. Since 2006 we have also come back to the dance floor with a series of 12", as well as continuing to tour and writing while we are on the road.

Underworld is independent more than ever?
- We are no longer part of the industry, nor of any "movement". No-one is asking us to sell a certain number of albums. The only pressure we are under is one we have put on ourselves, and that is our goal of being happy! When we had to select the tracks for this album, we just had to go through everything we had created over the past 5 years and "digest" what had influenced us. And with Rick as producer, the album was perfected down to the last second. It's really good.

On Ring Road, one could say that you have become a rapper!
- Do you know The Last Poets? For me, they are one of the most influential groups in the world. Their first album, in particular, is outstanding. I am envious of the way they use the language and rhythm of words. That's not what I wanted to do, and this track is not a hommage to The Last Poets. Just the fruit of their profound influence.

This album, like what you do on stage, is not just one track after another..
- Because we wanted to release a coherent album, with each track in its right place, we listened to a lot of albums, film scores and instrumentals, as well as electronic and the most recent music coming from the german club scene. In the studio, we often listened to Caravanserail by Santana, which I bought when I was a kid. Side one of the album sounded like one continuous piece. Composing a whole album on this principle, just made up of "movements" could be an interesting project. We haven't quite got there yet, but we are not far off.

(Under the photo): In the 70s, Robert Fripp theorised on the idea of small, independent artistic communities, exchanging their knowledge. Karl Hyde believes in it!

Not really, I was just feeling a little embarassed to have not tried to do the translation by myself, or to find a correct automatic translator

i had the pleasure of getting into the 70's rock albums that eno did. you can really hear the influence he's had on underworld. there is also a guitar solo during two months off from a live UW recording that sounds alot like king crimson (robert fripps band). love these connections

if there is ever a UW/eno collab released then i can die happy
