it really isn't that hard to play piano like Billy or Elton (FYI).

Perhaps, but how many people can both tickle the ivories and sing in the manner Elton does? I see the Englishman has opened up a bit of a gap at last. It's hard to see Billy coming back from here. Though this is the man who wrote Uptown Girl, so anything is possible.

Some early Elton John music is actually great stuff. Anything in the past few decades he's done has made my skin crawl though. And seeing as everything Billy Joel's ever done makes my skin crawl, I'm gonna have to go for Elton.

i'm pretty sure the only people who would bother trying are people who use the phrase "tickle the ivories"!

what about the theme song to bosom buddies? that's a classic piece of songmanship

edit:

see what I mean? this clearly shows my point. The busom buddies song with elton so enraptured at billy's greatness he does a peculiar thing...

That Joel song Pressure or Under Pressure has one of the best techno loops ever put on wax!

And thanks Strangelet that was fun to watch.

Just clicked on the video. Oh God, I think we're all descending into a very dark place.
Though I do remember thinking that that Billy Joel Vietnam song was pretty powerful, you know the one, "And we were sharp As sharp as knives.."
As for Benny & the Jets, I've not heard the original but who's heard the hilarious Beasties Boys take on it?

Forgot about that one. That is classic....although only because it was the theme song for a classic show. I loved that show as a kid. But if I heard the song on it's own, no association with the show whatsoever, I think I would hate it.

Re: Elton John or Billy Joel
Good songs by Elton:
"Rocket Man"
"Tiny Dancer"
Good songs by Billy:
"Big Shot"
"Only the Good Die Young"
Bad songs by Elton:
Everything put out in the late 70's to present and anything w/o involvement of Bernie Taupin
Bad songs by Billy:
Everything else!

nah, i can't lie. I bought Billy's "Storm Front" LP from Columbia House Music Club when i was eleven. But i didn't like it.

Tell you what, this poll is driving up my blood pressure.
Throw in an option for Ben Folds, such a star on the 2006 dirty albums list, and my head may explode.
