Re: born slippy - live versions (listings) [comparisons]
Yeah, but this was about the evolution and development of the song prior to its release, not its evolution and variation as a live performance after its release.

Re: born slippy - live versions (listings) [comparisons]
i can confirm that the leicester performance now released is from october 1994. i was at leicester uni at the time and went to both gigs. the feb 94 one was the megadog tour, underworld played one set. By october, underworld were big enough to be the headline -hence the mmm dog. i distinctly remember this gig because they played two sets -a fact also recognised in the title of the track on the deluxe release. Dance music in provincial cities was still in its relative infancy - leicester uni was in fact several years ahead of most student unions at this time -these were truly exciting, unforgettable times. hardly any students went to the megadog gig -it was all crusties and "townies" -a really interesting vibe.

I am curious as to why they specifically refer to the 2 sets in the title of the track -as in 2 sets let them play a longer version maybe? obviously i dont remember nuxx at that time as it was unreleased.

when slippy came out i always span the other side of the 12 inch, never nuxx. i didnt really rate it to be honest. i have never understood why that track sold a million and nothing else by underworld came remotely close. the power of the media bandwagon in full effect -thats what nuxx was -and not a bad thing that a band as great as underworld had that, for a brief time.............................

Re: born slippy - live versions (listings) [comparisons]
i find it interesting that they have *never [i think] played the entire born slippy. nuxx 11 minute version in its entirety live...

they always add some improvs at the end, or middle... and they never do the keyboard solos and drum parts like the final recorded version...

even after 200 something like plays....

I'm 99% sure they played Nuxx at the Hollywood Bowl gig in June...

1) the live jams... I realize the song was still in progress in 1994, and that the live versions are heavily improvised, but they sound kind of random to me, by UW standards. That is, overloaded with drum loops (including plenty of 808 hihats), not really coherent. Also, maybe its a product of where they were in terms of live performances at the time, but I felt like a lot of the sample and beats dropped in at random, not in conjunction with Karl's vocals, which even back then we're pretty much fixed for NUXX. I need to revisit the older live boots as I may be forgetting how freeform they really were!
well, at least some of the lyrics seemed to be settling in...

the structure of the song varied, but eventually it became fixed also.

Quote:
2) was NUXX always planned as the BIG single? As its a remix on the original Born Slippy disc and we all know the Trainspotting Legend, I'd think not. So then, anyone else surprised by how many versions of NUXX they dug up for the box set? Then again, with the reel and take names sprinkled about the b sides and dubno rarities, maybe there are many more versions of other tracks, probably a lot of random or unfinished jams....but imagine if your favorite tracks had wildly different versions! Bet it's the case. Yeah, tracks develop a lot over the recording process, or in the case of tracks like ALAF, over the years. But decisions are made and elements are dropped. I'd be interested in hearing songs in a less recognisable state rather than remixes or subtle versions of the final cut.
Just some thoughts!
i doubt it.

it was an experiment, that probably got huge because of the movie,
and the era..

timing...

yes, they could have showcased other songs, but there probaby wouldn't have been enough interest.

I think there's one exception, Viva Festival in 1999. It was one of the gigs used in Everything Everything so that may have had something to do with it. And maybe this 2003 gig, although I think the setlist there is incomplete.

The KCRW and Black Label Project gigs also missed NUXX, as well as a few Lemonworld broadcasts, but those weren't proper gigs really.
