Live keyboards?
Like Holden, I've been listening to loads of Underworld live lately and have noticed some variation among certain elements of certain songs like Rez (slow intro version), Beautiful Burnout and others that makes me wonder if Rick is playing some elements live on a keyboard. I'm not musically or technically qualified to really know one way or the other, but I thought some of the electronic musicians here would know.

Re: Live keyboards?
Never seen a show but I think he is...I have a recording of "Kittens" where he kind of goes nuts on the synth (at least it sounds that way) and definitely hits a few bum notes...pretty sweet either way

Re: Live keyboards?
Rick did for Beautiful Burnout during 2007-2008, but for the 2009 tour, it went to prerecorded sample.

Re: Live keyboards?
for the 2007/08 period rick also did some singing through a vocoder he played live for Rez/Cowgirl while Karl sang.

Dinosaur Adventure 3d has live Keys sometimes doesnt it?

i'd like to hear this. got a copy?

i definitely prefer live instruments to pre-recorded loops, which is why i screamed when karl pulled out his guitar in the atlanta show two years ago. it gives a more 'at the moment, this is me' feel, rather than 'i recorded this and now i'm playing it back to you' feel.

Re: Live keyboards?
I don't actually think theres any keyboard playing... the equipment is hooked up and the sounds are programmed / sequenced from them... Extra sounds in Kittens, the live version has had some more distinguished synth parts in there, plus i know karl's guitar made an appearance on a few occasions... Dino3D the 'RCM' version is what is played live, that has extra syth bits too.. Although, Rick definatly was singing through a vocoder i recent times, there is a video of boy boy boy on youtube with him doing it

Re: Live keyboards?
Since the late 90s Rick has a Clavia Nord Lead (possibly the 2(x) version by now) in his live rack, see here: http://www.vintagesynth.com/clavia/nord2.php

"live" playing includes:

- end pad over Push Upstairs (1999, see here: )

- the lead synth on Beautiful Burnout (during OWB tour, lately it's sequenced)

Otherwise, the Nord is sequenced, but Rick tweaks it (mainly the filter via the modwheel) for example:
- middle part of Cowgirl
- break sequence on TMO
- lead synth on Rowla
- some other additional which I heard on Banstyle (pitching it up)

When Rick does Vocoding for Karl (Strumpet, Airtowel), he uses the Nord as a Controller for the Vocoder (Orange3, in software, i presume)

bryant - it's the live in tokyo version...could definitely be wrong on this, but it feels kind of live to me
