Rupert Hine - the Deep End
Can we discuss this album a bit? I don't think I've read anything about Rick & Karl working on this album

Plus, I mean... Underworld don't collaborate all that much with other people (and most of them have been post 2000)

If you didn't know - "Considerable production input was donated by Rick Smith and Karl Hyde from Underworld"

(Rick & Karl appear on several tracks and UW are credited with arranging two songs)

I managed to find mp3 of this album a bit ago, but never really got around to listening until recently. According to discogs, it was only released in Germany

When was the album actually recorded? It was released in '94, but to me... it actually sounds like a weird middle ground between UWMK1 and early MK2/Lemon Interrupt

(In all honesty, when I saw the release date ... I was hoping that it would have sounded like a 'missing link' between "Dubno..." and "Second Toughest..." - but not so much luck)

Although the backing track to "Midnight Business" vaguely reminds me of "Ancient Fat Farm Coat"

Re: Rupert Hine - the Deep End
Can't really add too much to this. But was listening to a podcast with Rupert Hine,
and about 2 hours into it, they mention the Underworld connections.

But mostly about their early work on their first couple of albums:

Very interesting to me.

I don't know all the details, but I think the connection between them is Bob Geldof and UW's management, Geoff Jukes. Geoff repesents or represented all of them, and UW did a lot of stuff with Geldof in the interval between MK1 and MK2. I think you're absolutely right that this stuff with Hine probably was done between MK1 and MK2.

That was mentioned in the interview.

Re: Rupert Hine - the Deep End
They connected again on the Songs for Tibet compilation which was organized by Rupert Hine. Along with Underworld's To Heal and Restore Broken Bodies, Hine contributes The Heart of the Matter (Underlying Mix) to that comp as well,The Heart of the Matter being one of the tracks Underworld produced and arranged. This Underlying mix is identical to the album version though, except for better mastering and an earlier fade out.

The only "Underworld sounding" tracks are The Heart of the Matter, Midnight Bruises (both with "arranged by" credits for Underworld) and The Other End (Instrumental), kind of an extended dub dance mix of The Shallow End which Rick and Karl contributed to. The rest of the tracks Karl and Rick contributed to don't have much of a strong Underworld sound at all.

The Other End (Instrumental) has some sound effects from Mother Earth in it.
