She certainly has iconic status in the UK, but that is far more to do with her diva tantrums, her drug taking and her dodgy boyfriend than anything else. She can warble a good tune when she is not pissed out of her head/off her face on chemicals. But that doesn't seem to be too often.

Re: Grammys = crap
I was lucky enough to catch her in a wee jailbait lock in at a smoke-filled club way back, she was wicked then. Chaotic now though..

Re: Grammys = crap
that award for the Woody Guthrie recording just means that the grammys are not 100% crap. just 99.9%. still, its a start.
As for Winehouse, well done to her. The music she makes aint bad. Pity her antics off stage overshadow it. Why is giving her 5 grammys a bad thing?

Re: Grammys = crap
The Grammies have been crap for years, at least in the "pop" categories. Maybe things are better in the niche categories (latin, folk, classical, album notes?), but not necessarily (see: best dance: Justin Timberjoke. best electronic: Chemical Brothers worst album).
I think this was summed up in a classic Simpsons where Homer drops his award and some guy picks it up, only to toss it in the trash "oh, it's a Grammy." Yuck. In addition to the rewarding of talentless horse hockey, i find it troubling that the Grammies always toss in some washed up nostalgia name in a thinly-veiled effort to appear relevant and "reward" true musicians. Why are new albums from Springsteen, McCartney, Fogerty, Dylan always included when they can't hold a candle to their former glory days? Is current music all that bad or can no newbies write songs of the like of these oldies? No. Just good music often doesn't sell and the Grammies are nothing more than a popularity contest.
