Re: Our Own Anthology
Found this recently on Amazon.com. Gives a nice overview of the various Underworld rarities and B sides, and why they should go on a 2nd Anthology...
A bit too long to paste here, but worth a read...

So you'd like to... discover the ideal Underworld compilation?

Re: Our Own Anthology
well, now that things are settling down for me..

yes, i did come across the discs that matt sent
me........

now, i just have to dig up all those other tracks,
(vinyl/cd/etc)...

i'm hoping this could be the year to finally make
all these projects work out..

not to sound too envious, but i really wonder how
people make it into the music industry to work on
these projects..i know if i ever got offered a job
doing these kind of things, i would seriously consider
it..

anyways....thanks for keeping the thoughts alive..

now to make it a reality..

i think if you did you'd certainly do a better job than most of them. it seems like a lot of compilations are put out without any thought or knowledge of the bands and its fans.

while that may be true in some cases,

i'm sure there's a lot more legal and political
issues that are involved...

when you do a freelance or fan job, you don't
have to worry about royalties or other things
that 'legal' compilations have..

on the other hand, there have several really
good boxsets that have come out that i
consider very well done, the cure rarities,
big country boxsets, bjork boxsets, echo and
the bunnymen boxsets, duran duran, and
depeche mode, and many other ones....so
it can be done...its mostly about commercial
viability..

i remember when the uw anthology came out,
and i think (was it?) steve hall, or someone
else from jbo posted some messages here..
and said basically the same thing, that they
really couldn't have these 'ultimate' compilations
because it wasn't financially viable..

i think other countries (ie japan, and certain
asian ones) get special tracks/extras because
the market over there is very different to the
one in the US/UK.....i don't think thats going
to change anytime soon either..

the one outlet that seems to be gaining momentum
(fortunately/unfortunately) is the digital download
area (ie itunes etc)...and mabye even via underworlds
own website.....however there is some dissatisfaction
with either the quality of the encodings or the
lack of a hard copy of the art, and the physical
medium of the cd.....if they were to offer old/rare
tracks for US$0.99 they could probably find an
audience.....i know i've just started to download
some tracks that are unfortunately digital only
(abc / new order / bt)...but its either that or
not get them at all, or pay for an extremely over-priced
promo cd on ebay....

not to many choices out there that will make
everyone happy yet..

i wonder, matt, how you feel about the rise of
digital only tracks, and how this impacts collecting?

(or maybe that topics been done to death in some
other thread..)

well we've not discussed not this specific element, we've not discussed the collecting aspect as such, but as a collector per se, i'm not into collecting 'digital' music as a format, beacuse for some reason to me it doesn't seem real... i know it exists, and if its the only format to get the current UW tracks, i will buy it (and have), but i am more interesed in getting something hard copy, whether it be the cheaply manufactured CD-r promo's or the much better value 12"

i paid a heavy sum for a 2 track promo of JAL to Tokyo, which was extremely limited (to 25 copies), which, in reality, must have cost about £0.10p to make, and the guy selling it didn't pay for it either, so if this is the way collecting's going to be because of digital music its going to become harder and 'unfair' and i'm not going to like it...

i'm still holding out for the commercial releases of the latest UW music via record and cd, which have been mooted, but as digital takes off, even more so this year, labels and artists won't need to send out promo's or even release stuff in 'hard form' any more...this is kinda a long topic for another thread really...

i find it a bit rough when they do release 'download only' tunes, such as the Pete Heller remixes of Jetstream, and then find out that they are to be either released commercially outside of the country hosting the download site, or as incentive tracks on promo's given to dj's....the whole point of excluisve downloads should be that thats the only place you are going to get it...how hard is it for a dj to copy it to a cdr and play it from that...???

mmm...i'll be back later to finish this post off

i wanted to move this discussion
to another thread..but i'm not
sure where it should go...

if you want to start another one,
please do..

i just wanted to note that, i think
there will always be promos, either
vinyl or cd-r made, just because i
dont know what percentage of djs
in clubs use laptops/mp3 files only..

in fact if anything, i think i've seen
a resurgence in vinyl releases,
judging from all the vinyl on
releases and limited editions..

some examples of mixed releases:
new order - waiting for the sirens call 3x7"
exclusive, although many of the mixes are
on promo cds

new order - guilt is a useless emotion
(download only in the US)..although there
are cd promos with all the mixes

depeche mode - almost all of their singles
off the last album have several promo
vinyl and cds also

abc - re-released all their old 'neutron'
label albums with extra tracks, and
also as downloads...one album,
'abracadabra' is digital only, and
has several digital only extras also...

i'm sure there a lot more current groups
that have done this also, i've only tried
to keep with the older groups that i
used to listen to..

i think that labels are still experimenting
with the formats and trying to see which
methods are easiest to use, and profitable.

and yes, it does create quite a headache
for fans and collectors..

Re: Our Own Anthology
oh, and one more thing, another obvious issue,
that is certainly not the fault of the labels..

many releases are geared towards certain markets,
so the release dates will be different for different
countries.... so if new mixes of a song are
commissioned for a different country, of course
when it first came out, those people lose out
on getting it...

i think thats always been the case..
(remember the 'king of snake' promos that
came out before 'beacoup fish' was released)..

and then later when it was re-released,
there were many more mixes ...and even
the italian only ones..

Re: Our Own Anthology
ok, i've actually dug up
these tracks..

Code:
underworld anthology 2 v0.1
-----------------------------

  disc 01 - 92 - 93
  -------------------------------------
  time track (remix) notes
  ----------------------------------------------------------
  8:51 01 Minneapolis vinyl only
3:05 02 Minneapolis Airwaves vinyl only
  12:29 03 Eclipse vinyl only
5:43 04 Mother Earth (fm mix) vinyl only
6:13 05 The Hump (wild beasts) vinyl only
8:49 06 The Hump (groove without a doubt) vinyl only
  7:06 07 Mmm...Skyscraper I Love You(telegraph 6.11.92) cd
  9:12 08 Mmm...Skyscraper I Love You (jam scraper) cd
8:20 09 why? why? why? (wasted mix) cd volume 8 only
12:14 10 why why why (extended) cd japanese only
  ---------
  78m:57s + 3m:05s = 82m:02
so it might be a little too long for one cd
(maybe with overburn, and if you remove the gaps
it would fit)

Re: Our Own Anthology
Isnt the wasted 8min mix just a fade of the 12min version?

I read somewhere that some version of "Underworld - Why Why Why" was also called on some releases "Underworld - Change"? Is it really a proper mix?
