I'm a little baffled at the universally positive response to the show, though. pretty clearly they were working out kinks. at times the sound was terrible-- during king of snake, for example, it was like the top half of the mix was missing-- you couldn't hear the trebly part that of course in this song carries the entire melody! other songs just did not sound punchy-- dirty epic was great to hear of course, but it sounded incredibly muddy/indistinct compared to the last time I heard it (atlanta about 18-20 months ago).
plus, the crowd... so hard to figure out. the way they reacted to nuxx but (for example) not Two Months made it seem like an audience with little knowledge of the canon, just a taste for what they heard on the radio once upon a time. on the other hand, second-best reception was for rez/cowgirl, which clearly shows it was a crowd of great discernment and taste (). (sorry. they agreed with me in thinking it was the high point of the evening so they must be smart!) no, seriously, there was some energy, but only at points, and generally not nearly as much as other UW shows I've seen.
and... really sorry about this... I just don't see that Karl has quite as much confidence in the new material as he did even when they toured OWB. I kind of felt for him at moments, thinking he felt like he had to work real hard to sell it....
I don't know. hopefully ny and points west will see better shows. I was a little underwhelmed.
