[underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
ok, yeah, we know all about underworlds illustrious past,
or do we? here for those of you, that might not have known, is yet another list.....let's start from the beginning and see what we have....and add as we go along on this retrospective.... sure, there's some discontent about the quality of their mixes now.....wonder why? anyways...here we go.. ======================================== 1st relase.. mother earth / the hump, 1992 ----------------------------------------------------- 12" : 1992 UK (Tomato Record; PLUM 2001) [x500; private pressing by the band] 01. mother earth 7:09 02. mother earth (fm mix)5:43 03. the hump (wild beasts)6:13 04. the hump (groove without a doubt)8:49 mixers: underworld ------------------------------------------- track 1 - album version, nothing new here track 2 - new mix, by underworld, interesting, but is it really that different? average track 3- non album track, pretty interesting, housey, and good beats track 4- remix of track 3, another longer version, once again a housey track, and uses pianos, congas, and nice bass tones, check out the wah-wah guitar =============================================== so what do give it, a B+ for effort, and C for overall execution (i never really cared for 'mother earth').. so much for their first effort.....but it was a start for much more, [Oh, and for those that haven't heard these yet, should we post them somewhere?(low quality or streaming format?????)] thoughts? ================================================= next up : mmm skyscraper I love you, 1993 ================================================= later -1 |

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
I like the intro to the FM mix, it has a bit of a Blade Runner vibe to it... but then, it kinda just goes into a very similar (if not the same) version of M.E. as on the album
the Hump, however... I've never been a fan of whatsoever. |

Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
I happen to really enjoy this album, but it doesn't offer much so I could see how some may not like it. I feel bad for downloading it (stealing), but I would certainly own a copy if it was more attainable; I've been scouring ebay for one in recent months. (and I don't ever listen to records!)
To start, I really like Mother Earth. The FM mix is quite similar to the original, but I still like it. The Hump (Wild Beasts) I really enjoy as well. To me, it feels like mix of the old Underworld (mk 1) and the new. The final track, The Hump (Groove without a doubt) is another good one if you like the Wild Beasts mix. My only complaint is that it only consists of instrumentals, and the vocals are a big part of why I enjoyed the Wild Beasts mix. I wish a Groove without a doubt mix with vocals could have also been included. |

thanx for the comments from all of you..
next up ---------------------------------------------- mmm skyscraper I love you, 1993 ===================================== 12" : 1993 UK (Boy's Own / London; BOIX 13 / 85051-1) CD : 1993 UK (Boy's Own / London; BOICD 13 / 857051-2) 01. mmm skyscraper I love you 13:14 02. mmm skyscraper I love you(telegraph 6.11.92) 7:06 03. mmm skyscraper I love you (jam scraper) 9:12 ---------------------------------------------------------- i just got my vinyl copy of this a week ago...(i had the promo, and the cd single a long time ago)....so i have listened to it recently.. first up: remixers : underworld ====================================== track 1 - album version, now considered an all time classic, from the eerie samples, to the evocative synths, a definitive underworld track in sound, pacing, and overall mood.. track 2 - a shorter edit, thats actually more related to 'jamscraper'. with some speech from an asian lady to start off, it then descends into a more acidy, beat heavy version...with distorted synths, and echoey vocals...pretty repetitive, until the end, until a piano solo works its way into it.. track 3 - a more radical reworking of the some with some cool elements..totally different intro/keyboards, and a rollicking beat add up to a very good rework...with a few sparse vocal samples effort : B+ execution : B ------------------------------------------------- the album version was such a strong release, the remixes didn't really improve on it, and in fact aren't really that great (they're good), but the production values are excellent, and they start to show the trend of underworld reworking tracks to go into very different directions for a second effort it isn't bad, but theres a lot more to come... thoughts? next up: ============================== rez, 1993- b/w cowgirl rez, 1993 -b/w why why why later -1 |

series 2
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Underworld: Rez [1993] single 12": 1993 UK (Junior Boy's Own; COLLECT 002) 1 9:55 Rez 2 8:20 Why? Why? Why? Add this: ----------------------- + 3 12:14 Why? Why? Why? (Extended) i'm going to skip cowgirl, because that will come later. although there's pretty generic artwork. the one of rez/why why why comes in a nice pinkish colored vinyl. (lots of bootlegs out there though). ========================= track 1 - rez is a classic, no doubt about that. it's still heard today, and still be remixed, and is instantly recognizable, and a hallmark at nearly every concert they ever played. they also mix into cowgirl. track 2 - why why why is a mystery, seriously. excellent electro-tech, dark, moody, literally. where did it come from? the title asks the question 3 times. one of their best tracks, especially in it's 12 minute form. there are 5 and 8 minute versions on other compilations. a beautiful song. shame though, i don't think they ever played it live. overall: =============== effort : A execution: A not much about the cover art here. rez, would be associate with the cowgirl single, and that era. but why why why still remains hidden. although the 3cd deluxe anthology brought it back out. it was previously on some japanese re-releases of dubnobasswithmyheadman as the the only digital source for it. later -1 Last edited by negative1; 01-10-2014 at 01:04 PM. |

Underworld: Spikee / Dogman Go Woof
[1993] single CD5: 1993 UK (Junior Boy's Own; JBO 17 CD) 1 12:34 Spikee 2 12:13 Dogman Go Woof we move onto 2 more non album tracks. were these experiments? anyways, they came with the generic JBO logo of a guy eating a record for the cover. and it was also a cd-single. some of these tracks appeared on various JBO compilations, and also on various other compilations. spikee was played live a few times...and possibly dogman go woof. ----- spikee is interesting in its uses of repeated vocals, whereas dogman go woof is another epic instrumental track that takes a lot of time to build up, and work into a interesting pace and beat. i prefer spikee, but both tracks are good, and also very long and epic. back when most of their tracks where like this. you can see with lemon interupt that they had no problem with the longer format, that was more freeform and allowed the tracks to build. ---------- overall: ============ effort : A execution : B+ i wish they had done more with tomato artwork for a lot of these early tracks, but that's about the only issue with it. the music is stellar. recommended. later -1 |
