electronica is spreading?
my friends around the area are continuing to get into electronic music that ranges from the prodigy to massive attack, tiesto to aphex twin.
whenever i encounter these folk i tell them all i can about electronica music even though i've left the scene some time ago. does anyone else notice this trend?

Re: electronica is spreading?
It seems to me like Electronic music comes and goes in "cycles", corresponding mostly to what the big names in the genre are up to at the time. When there are notable new releases, interest goes up. Luckily, it seems like we're approaching that part of the cycle right now: 2010's hits are being shaped by the hands of quite a few genre stars (not the least of which being Rick & Karl) as we speak.

It ebbs and flows. In the US, i guess it depends on your region and your friends... lots of great scenes, but mostly underground. Not too many people getting excited in the pop culture about EDM, not even post-electronica poster boy Moby. When i travel, i'm always enjoying the fact that many places favor dance music to a much greater extent. Fun to hear it on the tv and in the clubs.

But with new material from Prodigy, Crystal Method, Royksopp, (maybe) Orbital, Moby...there's a bit of traction.

As for what's new and innovative in electronic music, i couldn't say. I was really into breakbeat/prog breaks ~2005-06 and those acts, but got burnt out on it. I still have a lot of loyalty for Underworld and Chemical Brothers, awaiting new material from Hybrid, Way Out West and Orbital, and wishing in my heart o' hearts for Fluke to reform. Otherwise, i revisit my friends in the record collection and enjoy hearing undiscovered artists in the netlabel sphere (usually of the ambient/experimental genre).

There is no "best". Just good and not good, & beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

XLR8R(or something like that) has some better than good free downloads at the moment too.

I'm absolutely(do I sound smart too?) over the top with Scuba's N16 Mix.

Oh, and now that my name is on every thread I'm going away a bit. For now. Don't wanna get banned again.

late 80's style synths (ex: Keane, Prodigy, the Crystal Method, Innerpartysystem, the Chemical Brothers, and UW's own stuff like "Beautiful Burnout") and de-tuned disco squelsh (Boyz Noise, SebastiAn, Justice, Gorillaz, Herve, 3OH!3 )

oh, yr funny.

i've given up on this in the US. it's just going to have to creep in under everyones noses.

as for whats hot, lets cynically break it down (note, i like just about all of this.. cept for la roux )

hipster shit: La Roux, any band that says the 80s was the best decade with a straight face.
self-absorbed boomkat crowd: DUBSTEP. EVERYTHING ESSENTIAL 12.
self-conscious hermit crap: raster norton
ambient bubble-dwellers: Miasmah, Type labels
the "smarter" ones that think dubstep is too fashionable: anything almost too awkward (bibio, floating points)
people who still like DFA for some reason: still DFA. only ones that like the new juan maclean because it's crap.
