Re: Amon Tobin - Foley Room
at first i thought it might lose legs over time because it was so immediately likeable, but this fucker has got depth
new sounds and gorgeous textures everywhere, a fully realized visual-audio component, and excellent tension throughout.
it's a beautiful record that pulls you in with how robust it is first, and then reveals all the smaller parts that make it beautiful too

Re: Amon Tobin - Foley Room
[warning]as you might know, i'm a big fan of amon.[/warning]

i've been listening to it since it leaked a few months back (and ordered it immediately from the ninjashop when it came out a few days ago): at first i didn't liked it that much, because it's somewhat more relaxed then other stuff (e.g. when compared to Chaos Theory). But hundreds of plays later, i still like it, and i think it's a great masterpiece that takes sampling to new areas.

ps: check out his new site, but take 20min to explore it in full (you won't see anything by just stopping by a few seconds)
pps: new tour dates announced! check the ninja page!

edit:
the tourdates are also on his myspace-page. @kid cue: there's also some songs to listen to, there.

Re: Amon Tobin - Foley Room
thanks for the link. this sounds like the Amelie soundtrack. with scary beats.

it also reminds me of that Venetian Snares album about the pigeons.

Re: Amon Tobin - Foley Room
The thing is, a description of the concepts (recordings of lions, motorcycles, etc) suggested to me that it was either:

a)Gimmicky. Ooooh, a motorcycle sample!

or

b)Mundane. People have been making albums out of original field recorded sounds for decades. Big deal.

It's neither of those things, because the execution is incredible. There's a meticulous attention to sonic detail that is uncommon and quite enchanting. Nothing is really shoehorned in, either, in the sense of "now let's wedge in such-and-such a sample". The sounds are beautifully recorded and processed in such a way that the uniqueness of their character really stands out.

The album comes with a DVD that shows him recording many of the source sounds and talking about the evolution of the album in a totally ego-less and unpretentious manner, which I watched first, and I think helped shape my reaction to the album.

Re: Amon Tobin - Foley Room
Listened to his tracks on Myspace and I think it's kinda meh. Nice beats and the dark vibe is good, but there are no standout sounds or melodies that grab me.
