China blocks Itunes because of 'Songs for Tibet'.
Chinese authorities appear to have blocked access to Apple's U.S. iTunes Music Store, following the release of the 20-song "Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace" collection Wednesday.
Users in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen confirmed that since as early as Wednesday morning, Beijing time, they began receiving "unknown error" messages when they tried unsuccessfully to access the store. Although Apple does not operate an iTunes Store in China, users may download free content such as podcasts, and those with U.S. credit cards may buy content from the U.S. store.
Although Amazon.com remains available in China, its pages for both the "Songs for Tibet" CD and download page fail to load, returning: "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading," the most common error message received for blocked sites.
Attempts by IDG News Service to reach both the iTunes Music Store and the Amazon pages failed Friday morning, but succeeded when using a VPN.

That's lame. But not unsurprising.

Wow, and this might be the most powerful country in the world someday. It's a scary thought.

A capitalist economy run by an authoritarian government, what a great idea!...

Authoritarian States rule!

So does this mean that anyone who attended the CD Press Thingy at the Artjam on 8-7-08 is banned from China? Wonder if they'd imprison or shoot their citizens for owning the CD.

In China, you can be one in a million and there are 10,000 more just like you!

That`s one of the reasons why I moved to Japan!
(Although, at the end of the day, I don`t know if it makes much of a difference since Japan is a client state of the U.S.)

Regarding China: 2 years ago, my friend Andy and I went to China for our summer vacation. One day, we went "off the beaten path" and ventured into a hutong neighborhood (the traditional courtyard residences primarily in Beijing). We stopped to eat at a food stall in the hutong area, and every 10 minutes a military van with machine gun guards drove around the corner - looking for dissent from the locals, I guess! I must admit that I was a bit shocked, but I suppose this is normal if you live in a "police state"! The interesting part was that I never saw this armed entourage near the tourist/foreigner occupied area near our hotel!
