the girl with the dragon tattoo
(or 'men who hate women' to translate the original title) (which makes more sense, but hey...)

1st off - it's loooooong - around 2.5 hours
2nd off - it's in swedish (ok for me and certain others here ) but if you're subtitle-averse...

probably because of point 1, it's a nigh-on word-for-word shot-for-shot representation of the book which means that despite taking a while to get moving, it's every bit as good as the book, which means that it's fantastic.

if you haven't read the book(s), there are bits that will seem strange and superfluous, and i'm not sure how you'd take the film as a whole - i'd be interested in hearing a 'non-reader''s take on it.

but it was certainly worth the time spent - as good a thriller on-screen as on paper...

I haven't read the book but I really liked this movie. Hope part 2 will be just as good.

Well, there´s room for improvement as regards the Swedish acting (excluding Miss dragon tattoo).

I would never read a book like this but I saw the film.

The first film was like "Wow! A thrilling This-is-a-mans-viagra-world story?? Amazing!"
The second film, chock-full of affliction, was almost like a prelude to a comedy
and the the third film just took 141 minutes of my precious time but I never felt more feminine.

"a-man's-viagra-world story"?!?! det skjønner jeg ikke!

i thought i'd never get into a thriller like these; but i did and consumed all 3 in quick succession (even the third!)

the strange thing about this film (not seen the next 2 yet!) after reading the book, is that it left me thinking 'why?' the books are so well-written, and the film is SO close to the book, that you can happily take one version without ever needing the other to fill you in... which is pleasing and annoying at the same time!

The whole story is centred on men´s unnatural sexual drive, isn´t it?

Re: the girl with the dragon tattoo
i rather think it's more about man's abuse of power - sex just becomes part of that when a woman is involved.

Re: the girl with the dragon tattoo
Already up for a remake by Hollywood into an English language version.

However, the great news is David Fincher is interested in directing and it would star fantastic British actress Carey Mulligan.

I haven't read the books and know lots of people who love them. However one of my mates (who generally likes the same kinds of books as me) had this to say about it in an email to me:

Quote:
I'm about halfway through this now, and it's really properly tragically terrible. This is a bigger scam than Harry Potter. This bloke makes JK Rowling, or even Matthew Reilly seem like Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

There are two main characters; the journalist that the author wishes he was, and most hilariously the highly complex 24-year-old woman whose been the victim of a lifetime of abuse and misunderstanding. The middle-aged Swedish bloke telling the story has absolutely no fuckin idea how to create such a character with any credibility. Instead she's a bland cliched one-dimensional robot. He might as well stop wasting his time trying to portray her through narrative and just say "You know Lisbeth, the herione, she is like totally complex. Like just bonkers complex. Take my word for it". It'd be more convincing and less ham-fisted than "she's got piercings and tattoos and is into computers".

And it's just so fuckin boring. And I don't just mean that nothing has happened (even though fuck all has), there's just a total lack of atmosphere or tension or feeling. Characters don't develop, they just occur.

"Hello, I'm Mikael"
"Won't you come in?"
"OK"
"Would you like some veal cutlets in a cream sauce with beets"
"OK"
"Shall we have sex now. We've known each other 15 minutes, after all?"
"OK"

"That was awesome. I am totally in love with you now"
"OK"

I mean, I know these people are Swedish but for fuck's sake!!!

AND ANOTHER THING, I know some people get pissy about product placement in films, but IF THIS CUNT MENTIONS APPLE COMPUTERS ONE MORE TIME I AM GOING TO TEAR THE FUCKIN BOOK IN HALF.

If ever there's a case where the film will surpass the book, this has to be it.
Is he OTM or way off?

potatoes potatos, it sounds like. i'd say he's off, though book1 is the weaker of the 3. that's not to say they're 100% perfect; there are some strange character traits and episodes that feel like padding; but i found them a good read - they're not earth-shattering or world-changing - your mate needs to step away if he's getting so worked-up - no sense in wasting any more of his life
