Personalized Drift Album
"It's not meant to be an album"
"Why do this if UW have already given us their own version"
"isn't this kind of disrespectful?"
"let some time pass for us to digest the object as intended, for pete's sake"
"You know that UW might know far better than us on how an album, such as it is, would be structured out of this, right?"

all of these imaginary critiques that i just came up with are LIES. a 40-track monster was dropped in our lap, we all have broadly different opinions on it, and i know you over-particular little goblins have made your own private album of the whole affair just as i have. i want to see it and, if we're feeling jovial, we can even try out each other's versions!

for my own part, i did try to side-step the personal playlist best-of trap and tried to come up with a plausible underworld album in structure and momentum, even including songs that weren't faves and more in line with that you'd expect from UW. I ended up compromising by stuffing it a bit and maybe having more heavy-hitters than usual but it's gotta be mine somewhere. Plus the closer i got to what seemed right, the more i relied on the sampler versions. it was a weird little journey that looked back a lot and considered previous albums in a much more analytical way than i usually do.

anyway!

Another Silent Way / Drift Poem / Better Than Diamonds
Listen to Their No (Sampler Version)
Border Country (Sampler Version)
Mile Bush Pride (Sampler Version)
Soniamode (Aditya Game Version)
Toluca Stars
This Must Be Drum Street (Final Version)
Big Bear
S T A R
Seven Drone Music
Low Between Zebras

--and if we want to get Japanese 2CD version about it--

Pinetum (Final Version)
Universe of Can When Back (2018 version)
Dexters Chalk (2018 version)
Roof Off
Do Breakers Trip
Two Arrows
Schiphol Test (Sampler Version)
Brilliant Yes That Would Be (Sampler Version)
S T A R (Rebel Tech)
Imagine A Box
Doscientos
Dune

and that's it! curious to see if anyone test drives this or has something similar to mine, but mainly intrigued as to how others have done it for themselves

Re: Personalized Drift Album
Mine's come out somewhat close to the Sampler Edition, possibly unsurprisingly.

1. Appleshine
2. Another Silent Way / Drift Poem / Better Than Diamonds
3. Border Country
4. Listen to Their No
5. Dune
6. Brilliant Yes That Would Be
7. S T A R
8. Schiphol Test
9. Custard Speedtalk

Appleshine is very much the typical Underworld slightly-understated-moody-techno opener, follows on from Dirty Epic, Mo Move, Crocodile, Bird 1 and just sets things off well for me. The extended Another Silent Way suite is a nice '90s throwback, structurally, and follows the moody opener with a more energetic track, as Push Upstairs, Two Months Off, Beautiful Burnout and Always Loved a Film did. The two obvious singles round out the more energetic first half. Border Country's quick opening makes it flow better from ASW for me, with Listen to Their No following on nicely.
Then we have a break for a couple of slower tracks to break things up, Beaucoup Fish-style. S T A R takes the position of the late-album-banger to keep things from getting too sedate - thinking Dinosaur Adventure 3D, Bruce Lee, Cowgirl - before winding down with Schiphol Test - a kind of Something Like a Mama / Air Towel moodier number - and ending with Custard Speedtalk, which is the logical album closer of everything here for me. Nine tracks, 75 minutes, meaning it feels more in line with the '90s albums.

If this has actually been the album, I'd have had no problem putting it in my top 3 UW records on first listen.

Re: Personalized Drift Album
Yes! I had debated starting one of these threads several times over the past couple of weeks. I have been playing A&R man with this collection a lot, and just found it way too hard to boil it down to the length of one disc. For me this is Underworld's Physical Graffiti. Here's my album:

Disc 1: Drift - Dusk

Listen to Their No
Another Silent Way/Drift Poem/Better Than Diamonds
Brussels
Appleshine
Mile Bush Pride
Border Country
Soniamode (Aditya Game)
Toluca Stars

Disc 2: Drift - Dark

Brilliant Yes That Would Be
Low Between Zebras/This Must Be Drum Street (Sampler Version)
STAR
Doscientos
Seven Drone Music
Universe of Can When Back
Give Me The Room
Schiphol Test
Japanese Bonus Track: Dune

Single 1: Another Silent Way
B-Side: Two Arrows

Single 2: Border Country
B-Side: Dexter's Chalk

I've not given much thought to mine yet, but this feels VERY much like a proper Underworld album. Very easy to hear this in my head. Well done.

Re: Personalized Drift Album
took a try at making my own 'definitive album', to which i tried to put most of my favourite DRIFT tracks in a cohesive order. i found that limiting the tracklist to only a certain number of tracks would challenge how the list turns out. with 20 tracks total, it can be split into a double album. both would be able to fit on separate discs, but still, it runs well as a great playlist

(all taken from the Series 1 release)
DISC 1
1. Universe of Can When Back
2. Another Silent Way / Drift Poem / Better Than Diamonds
3. Appleshine
4. This Must Be Drum Street
5. Listen To Their No
6. Low Between Zebras
7. Hundred Weight Hammer
8. Soniamode (Aditya Game)
9. Doscientos
10. Poet Cat

DISC 2
1. Molehill
2. Appleshine (All the Lights)
3. Brussels
4. Border Country
5. Mile Bush Pride
6. Imagine A Box
7. S T A R
8. Doris
9. Tree and Two Chairs
10. Custard Speedtalk

got half through this doing the dishes and found it interesting. the transitions made me itchy (i have not found an upbeat companion to appleshine aside from drum street) but i went with it and it was different than anything i'd put together. enjoyed it! almost convinced me to switch listen to their no (which is the closest to push upstairs as the short punchy one imo) with border country on my own list buuuuut i'm sticking to it so far.

got the rest of these on their own playlist so i'll see how those go soon

I like these selections very much! I'm still considering my track lists, but these are very close to what I would consider perfect big room/chill out records

Re: Personalized Drift Album
DRIFT - SERIES 1 - VERSION KH

This was an earnest and ambitious attempt to approximate what Drift would be if Underworld themselves had designed it to one album. It's meant to sound like a classic album using new material. The tracklist below doesn't really reflect the listening experience, as I made prodigious use of segues as on Underworld albums of old. The boys' inclusion of the Another Silent Way/Drift Poem/Better Than Diamonds track in the boxset gave me license to attempt something similar in my third track, which I hope you think sounds pretty cool despite my amateur abilities. I daresay I've come up with some transitions no one's tried yet, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

01. Universe Of Can When Back
02. Listen To Their No
03. Give Me The Room / Mile Bush Pride / Another Silent Way / Drift Poem
04. S T A R
05. Dune
06. Custard Speetalk
07. Appleshine (All The Lights)
08. Seven Drone Music
09. Brilliant Yes That Would Be
10. Low Between Zebras
11. Border Country
12. Toluca Stars

To be honest I'm not strictly familiar with the forum policy on file sharing so The Bang or others may wish to edit this portion of the post to adhere to the guidelines. Because of the special edits I did this isn't something you can replicate on Spotify. But to avoid sharing individual tracks that are commercially obtainable, I've made my version of Drift available only as a continuous DJ-style mix that cannot be heard any other way. It's in the following formats:

MP3
ALAC
WAV

The artwork is inspired by Simon Taylor's art on the individual CDs in the boxset. Those images are taken from the video for "Threat Of Rain," and are revealed in the album commentary to be the outputs of sound oscillators used by Rick in the studio. I painstakingly screen-capped the video until I found a couple I liked. The font is the same one used by Simon in the liner notes, and the text formatting and color is inspired by what he did on the disc faces.

Hope you enjoy!
