I can understand why younger people may be offended. If so, you need to do a bit of history reading to catch up on the human understanding process that's been going on for a very long time. Old people didn't take offense to this word back in the day.

Re: *GASP* No he dinnit
According to the book, Reid:

Quote:
"was wowed by Obama's oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama - a 'light-skinned' African American 'with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,' as he later put it privately."
Hmm.

Concerning the word negro:
I'm inclined to consider there an important difference between a word that is curiously old-fashioned and a word that is racist. He didn't use the other n-word.

Is the concept of recognizing a "negro dialect" racist?
No. We all know (and America knows) that there are dialects that correlate with races, including a dialect we would fairly accurately associate with a black person. Naturally that doesn't mean we expect all black people to speak like that. But broadly, there really is such a dialect - that Americans would absolutely recognize. So again, no, not racist, just observant.

Is the idea that Obama can/would turn his dialect on and off racist?
No - although it's probably insulting in other ways to his boss!

So is that it?

His remarks are however fairly damning of (parts of) the electorate. Which may account for some of the furore in a deep-seated way.

Add in that there are some on the left overly-sensitive on the issue of race, and many on the right desperate to see Reid defeated (and enjoying playing liberals at their own game) - and the reaction is not surprising.

And no less wrong for it.

"Stinking racist comments"?

I find the opportunist, hand-wringing reaction more offensive than the comments themselves.

I think I just got in trouble for saying "Old People". Anyone know the P.C. word for this one in, what is it? 2010? Yeah, in 2010.

My bad:

Old - chronologically gifted
Old Person / Elderly - Gerontologically Advanced
Old Person / Elderly - Senior Citizens

My old roommate had a friend that was strangely fearful of the elderly and referred to them as "faders".
