"so it was surprising to read that New Zealand was the best.."
Otherwise known as a place to post rugby news.
Which will probably just be my Welsh associate and myself, but even the little people need love too.... (Cue velcro jokes.....) The thread title is from the fifa thread - where 3498 said: Quote:
Start here for some reading on the Blackness. And so as to transition from the vuvuzela infused madness of football in SA - please watch this video first - Invictus - South African rugby's greatest day - reborn from the shackles of apartheid.... if it was filmed today. Quote:
But the All Blacks are 15 months out from hosting the rugby world cup in 2011. It'll be the first time NZ has hosted since 1987 - which is the last time the ABs won it. As anyone from England, Oz, SA will remind you.... Cracking game it is. Tri-Nations series has just started - which involves NZ, Australia and South Africa - will post more as the series develops.

Re: "so it was surprising to read that New Zealand was the best.."
To be honest us Americans don't really have much of a grasp on New Zealand culture. We know about Flight of the Conchords and that's about it. So forgive me if we think New Zealanders are a bit soft
I don't know why rugby hasn't taken off...it's nothing to do with socialism, your #1 sports-watching demographic (males 15-40 or so) would love it. Maybe it is the injury issue. Here football is going through a huge about of criticism because of the concussion factor that is leading to brain damage...I can't imagine what a tackle sport WITHOUT pads would draw... I only mentioned the Samoans because whenever I see rugby on TV those are the guys who just dominate everyone. They are not just huge and able to take out anyone else on the field but they can really turn on the jets and score easily. In football it's possible to be a great player just by being really big and really strong but we have guys like Troy Polumalu who play safety which requires you to not only be able to put the hurt on somebody but also to be quick on your feet since you have to match a WR step for step...seems like the ideal rugby player to me |

Re: "so it was surprising to read that New Zealand was the best.."
So in about 3.5 hours, game two of the 2010 Tri-Nations series starts.
Right here in Wellington, the Blackness will take on the Springboks. At Eden Park last Saturday the Blackness gave a right shellacking to the current World Cup holders - with the final score being, 32-12. The ABs played intelligent, running rugby - and also smashed the living shit out of the Springbok pack. It was a beauty to behold. You can see . At the 1:30 mark on that highlights reel, Mils Muliana's acceleration is outstanding. Anyway, thanks to my brother - and a meeting he had with some Adidas execs - I'm off to the game. One of the best bits of an All Black test match, apart from the beers and the game, is the haka - the challenge that's laid down to the opposition team. Glen Osborne explains it pretty well . The traditional haka is In 2005 that All Black side wrote a new haka, to reflect them as a team, it's called - and that video from the game against the Springboks was the first time it was ever performed. It's great theatre - last week they did Kapa O Pango, so it'll be interesting to see which haka they do this time. Weather is really wet and rubbish - but it's all good.

Re: "so it was surprising to read that New Zealand was the best.."
I think it could take off here in the states. Maybe not the best comparison, but it could be how UFC / MMA has taken off over time versus boxing.
I do watch it when I can find it. I went to a few local tournaments while in college. It's not the socialism aspect...all of the pro leagues have some sort of socialism elements in it, i.e. revenue sharing being #1. I think the Americans won't get behind it if we aren't winning. -Jason |

Re: "so it was surprising to read that New Zealand was the best.."
A few more games gone in the Tri-Nations and the Blackness have pretty much done everything they need to do to take back the trophy. Three wins - all with bonus points - the Springboks and Wallabies scrapping it out for second and third.
If you're keen on watching games - and are able to do use the voodoo that is torrenting - http://acrossthetasman.com/ is probably the best site for getting a hold of games. Most test matches are available within 48 hours of being played - most are in HD quality. The site also hosts a tonnage (metric and imperial) of other obscure Antipodean sport, such as cricket, netball, rugby league, AFL and even some V8 Supercars - which is like Nascar, but with production cars and more than 2 corners on a track. You'll need to register - if it asks for a referral - PM me and I'll sort you out.

Re: "so it was surprising to read that New Zealand was the best.."
Right - end of year tour time - otherwise known as the autumn internationals in the North. When the filthy convict and colonial and boer riff-raff come traipsing north to cross swords and scrums with the locals.
All Blacks did the English over with a stop-start display that was at the very least better than the dross they served up in Hong Kong the weekend before. - Kev Mealamu cited for a head butt to Mongrel Moody's head. Fair enough - but NZ wants to know why the ex-Kiwi Dylan Hartley wasn't cited for an elbow the head of Captain McAwe? Wallabras topped the Welsh - Boks beat the Irish. This weekend's game see's the Scots take on the All Blacks in Edinburgh. The kilted ones still searching for their first win against the ABs. Yes - that's right - the Scots have never beaten the team wearing black or grey or white - in 27 meetings - since 1905. Two draws in there, but everything else a loss. The Scots on the up though - beating Argie in Argentina never easy - and they were close to the Triple Crown - so it should be a cracking game. ABs have named a strong side - with Sonny Bill Williams (2010's wunderkid at 2nd-five) and McAwe, Carter and all the established players in there. Aussie convicts take on the English - Boks to rumble the Welsh I think, whilst Ireland play Samoa - and France take on Fiji. And because it's always better just to watch a highlight reel:
