Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
as long as this thread is bumped lemme say how incredibly incremental this whole "getting used to" process is taking.
'glass' suddenly decided to sound brilliant last week after months of casual listening.

i was kind of let down by skream's album. i only really liked 'stagger' and another one i cant even remember the name of.

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
the Distance album is really good. his textures are alien + his drums are always pitch-perfect. the track selection is 100% consistent (ok, maybe a tad too consistent, but from a DJ standpoint, 100% killa no filla). it's just a shame that the vinyl has 2 tracks / side.

also check the new MRK1 album, that sounded good when i previewed it on the Planet Mu site.

dubman the best way to 'get used' to dubstep is to hear it on a big system. i agree though, the Skream album is kinda meh (favs - Kut-Off, Check It, Stagger) -- Skreamizms 1-3 and Tapped b/w Dutch Flowers are a much better reflection of his sound.

another good dubstep cd, while i'm at it, is the Tectonic label's Tectonic Plates comp. there should also be a Skull Disco comp out soonish.

i think i'm more trying to get used to this album rather than dubstep in general (though thats still true i think to a lesser extent), but yeah, dubstep seems like the only kind of thing where i feel that even the big fuck-off soundsystem in the living room isnt enough for that beautiful bass i keep hearing struggling to comeout in 'wounder' or in 'awake'

thanks for the recs, i'll get on it

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
i bought the MRK1 - Copyright Laws on Planet Mu and it's awesome. I've also got the Tectonic Plates comp, absolutely essential to anyone interested in dubstep. i managed to find a copy of the Benga cd, also very good, but with so many cuts on comps, his style is not as fresh on this disc as either the MRK1 or the Tectonic Plates comp.

Another great disc to look for is Bass Clef. His style is completely different than other dubstep artists. well, maybe not completely diff. but different enough and solid enough to warrant paying for a copy. He posted a good promo dj mix recently too.

saw that Bass Clef record in a bargain bin last weekend - i'm def picking up now.

for Benga i recommend:
The Invasion EP on Big Apple
first EP on Southside Dubstars
upcoming Crunked Up 12" on Tempa!

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
the new D1 EP is extremely good. samples here

lots of slippery textures and crackly percussion. but Mind & Soul, with the chipmunk samples, is incredible. the scene really, badly needs more tunes like this. unfortunately it looks like it's intent on dumbing down....

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
the new Appleblim/Shackleton thing on Skull Disco is a killer. fans of minimal/techno/minimal techno should dig very much.
a more interesting hybrid than Perverelist's last 12" IMO.

Vansan b/w You Bring Me Down
samples available at juno

the next Skull Disco is a Villalobos remix of Shackleton's "Blood On My Hands" ... draw yr own conclusions.
