I read it in school too, but I know there's been a lot of controversy about teaching it for really dumb reasons... puritanical idiots flipping out over the vaguest mention of sex and a few very mild examples of coarse language. The kind of people who want to ban this book are the kind of people who would love to ban any book that doesn't have the words "holy" and "bible" in the title. If they were to read, say, Of Mice and Men, it would probably kill them.
I read that it was banned in American Schools somewhere... I'm not American so it could have been wrong... looks like I am.

The JFK/Reagan thing, you've not heard of the connections of this book with Lee Harvey Oswald and John Hinckley Jr? I just made an (obviously incorrect) assumption that maybe the powers that be in the US thought that by reading this book American youths would go out and attempt to assassinate Presidents...

Re: The Catcher in the Rye
I've read somewhere that he still owns his copyright even after he dies…?

No, it wasn't banned… at least not from all of America… maybe really conservative parts of it, but we read and studied it at school. Excellent read.

But there's no way I'm watching a Catcher in the Rye adaptation. Too many books are being adapted into movies now (not as bad as REMAKING another movie though)……… complete loss of originality, especially in American cinema.
