I think the best part of fifth element was the second trailer for the film with the Moby song playing over it.

Fifth Element is a very fun movie to watch. whats to be overrated about? It doesn't take itself seriously. It also has some wonderful editting and cutting between scenes. Clever and fun

Milla Jovovich looks like Selma Blair in that poster.

Horrible trailer. Probably some really cool action sequences.

Absolutely! I've never heard of The Fifth Element being overrated..in fact, it was fairly well panned when it came out, and has more of a cult following than anything resembling mass appeal, methinks. Milla looks like a lot of fun, nomatter.

Well, I recognize your right to your opinion about it, but in response to "what's so overrated about it?":

It's a dumb, dumb, pretty movie that I can't even call overrated without a bunch of people springing to its defense. Hence...overrated.

Fair enough, but just because some people like something doesn't make it overrated. Yes, the movie's mostly crap, and i think most people will tell you so. What's overrated about liking it, if only for Milla Jovovich in surgical tape tops and sexy orange hair and....well, i digress.

Meanwhile, back on track, yeah, the trailer's poo. My larger concern is why video games and cartoons that were aimed toward a certain demographic (say, 13 - 30 yr old males with not much better to do than play video games or discuss anime), are being made into movies with multi-million dollar budgets? these movies rarely do well at the box office or in the critic's eyes. I dunno...i guess any way to make a buck.

i believe i said, "whats to be overrated about?" in order for something to be overrated it needs to be hailed as a great movie in the first place, no? this movie received awful reviews and was panned by critics across the boards. i dont think anyone here said it was a great movie and im certainly not jumping to its defense as an underrated science fiction masterpiece. its a movie that never tried to be serious.

other than that, i WILL give it proper dues in that i cant think of a single sci-fi movie that has the same feel that 5th Element has. Don't ask me to describe that because i just spent 2 minutes trying to and all i came up with is feel.

aw fuckit, its just a fun movie to watch. certainly not overrated or underrated because it was never rated to begin with. that movie was so off everyone's radar, even when it was in theaters.

i do however, feel that the editting is underrated. hats off to the editor/story-boarder.

Re: Milla Jovovich as Aeon Flux! well not really.....
i distinctly remember a quote on the TV spots saying The Fifth Element was the next Star Wars, which it certainly is not (whether i mean that it didn't have close to the same tone as Star Wars or that it turned out to be way better than all three prequels I'll leave as an exercise for the reader). In my eyes though it was completely sold as a really serious space action movie with all the explosions, action sequences, and gravitas of a real epic. A lot of my friends were disappointed at the time... also because LeeLoo's scene in the cab when she tries to convince Bruce Willis to help her was a total not-as-good version of natalie portman walking down the hall with groceries hoping Leon would open the door.

BUT

i think with time all those expectations have been stripped away and now everyone knows it's pretty wacky and french. I really like the movie personally... I still tell people that I am a meat popsicle.

Re: Milla Jovovich as Aeon Flux! well not really.....
This looks so much better than the Aeon Flux movie ever did.
and MIlla does look quite hot.

5th element at least had a decent story line that didn't take itself too serioiusly. I mean how can anyone not like especially with Chris Tucker doing his thing?

And those costumes? really neat world IMPO

crank!
