Re: Hope these new songs don't go on RiverRuns
Oh this thread is just a breeding ground for arguments...
Surprised nobody's complained about this: Quote:
To say that Dirty0900 wants Underworld to make a "shit album" assumes that the albums he was using as examples of success were bad. Not once was that said, and it certainly wasn't the basis of the entire argument. Quite the opposite, in fact: by making albums full of singles that could easily get themselves "on air", those bands got them on the charts and therefore reached some level of popularity, which could then be used to build excitement for a future release. Underworld currently has a large back catalog of tracks like that, and releasing them together could help them "spark new life" into the group. Now can we just put this to rest?

Re: Hope these new songs don't go on RiverRuns
i know he never said those were shit albums, and i knew (obviously) that he wasnt telling underworld to make shit slbums. he even said flat out "whether you think theyre good or not"
however, i'm saying they're shit albums. so my understanding, based on the logic here, is regardless of quality they should follow the example of recent shitty albums and follow suit and provide single material and stuff that can be used for ridiculous purposes just to stay out there and popular. which i'd be against. I'm sorry. I honestly am. There's no good reason for me to be arguing. But there's not a reason for you to be either.

Re: Hope these new songs don't go on RiverRuns
Uhhh, top-tier albums by somewhat well-known artists do get lots of press. How many Radiohead songs do you hear on the radio or TV? When Sufjan Stevens sold out concerts across the country, was it because of the runaway success of "Jacksonville"? If they were bad albums, nobody would know about them today.

Re: Hope these new songs don't go on RiverRuns
try 'chicago'
a vast, huge majority of 'good albums' dont get press either, while sevral terrible albums do. getting play or notice may just not be worth the hassle of coming up with something suited to radio play. if underworld have it in them to make another 5 star album, then they dont need to think of football commercials to make it, they just have to make an album that isnt nearly as problematic as recent output's been showing. however, this makes sense: Quote:
even though looking at the big picture it seems basically ridiculous to suggest how to get popular to a band that's been around some 25 years who's been-there-done-that. |

as for more attention to our beloved artists dubman, i don't think our dirty friend was implying in any way that they should make a crap album with catchy beats and make tons of money and sell out. what he was saying is that they're releasing things in the wrong place, and i agree. check out 'you do scribble' and some of the tracks named above that have been around for a while. a lot of good stuff was released on the riverruns (in addition to a good degree of crap), and then when OWB comes out, we expect an album that'll be better than the online stuff and the live stuff they've been releasing, but what we get turns out to be a bunch of moody-ambient style tracks that are okay, but seem strange to be placed on an album when they've got better stuff that could be put on an album and brought into the spotlight by those bastards at pitchfork and rolling stone when it comes across their desk for a review. i don't think he's suggesting at all that underworld should sell out, and to be honest i think you know that, too. it seems like you're looking for a fight, but when it comes down to it, dirty900 is just a guy on a forum like you and me, and it's not like rick and karl are going to pull up this post and come to a revelation that they should make crappy singles and base their entire future in music on something someone wrote on dirty. Uh, what the heck? Ansum = ambient. Monkey Wink, pretty much electro, sans beats. Put a beat on top (i've done it) and it's a regular Moaner 2.

Re: Hope these new songs don't go on RiverRuns
By the by, YDS, ALAF, and even Bamboo have been floating around in fairly finished forms for awhile now. yes, i know the argument in 2005-06 with the RiverRuns were that we'd heard snippets of the tracks on dirtyradio in 04, and for OWB, we got the Biro finally as Beautiful Burnout.
But in my view, the above tracks have served their purpose in the live arena and won't make it to an album or RR (if there is another). Just 2 cents.
