I had to convert the files to mp3 so they would play on my preferred player. However the quality really suffers when converting from one lossy format to another.

that's odd. it should stay exactly the same.
unless you're going from a higher bitrate to a lower one.

if you go from mp2->uncompressed or wav -> mp3
at the same bitrate. it should be the same quality.
