shapiro and her friend seem to just be relying on a sense of timing (it's 1980 in 2007! quirky!) to revive an exact same thing that i regularly channel surf through in late night infomercials. i've been told that there's minimal modern tweaking to distinguish this from a bad abba compilation, but if it's there it doesnt affect how positively stale it sounds. and to me it's either calculated or just unwelcome. |

to me, this is a terrible excuse for pop. it's taking advantage of everyone's conception of the genre and assuming naivete and bald-faced vacuity sould charm everyone to her because it's all the same, weightless magical stuff. and it's not, really. the biggest lack there is the lack of edge. there's always a rough snare to most good pop songs that you still come back for 2 months after it's out. and if what JT and timbaland are doing isnt necessarily "new" for pop, it could certainly be considered to be a mix of different pop elements in ways which sound really fresh. it exemplifies excellently what i heard someone else once say, that the people who hate on this and in the same breath insulate themselves with warp records fail to see that it's essentially using the same spirit of these bloops and blops for different ends that no one can get on a pedestal about.. i dunno, maybe i just prefer shameless hedonism rather than sexless disco. |
