That's correct: Merv and Joie of Eat Static were both members of Ozric Tentacles until the late 90s.

As for links... isn't it enough that people like any of these bands at the same time? Influences might be pretty tenuous (and I'd say, rather than a thread about prog rock being humorless, any thread that asks people to defend their favorite genres of music will be humorless, as some get really defensive), but it might be instructive to take a look. Even if it goes so far as to say that, for instance, prog is more classically influenced (ELP covering Aaron Copland and Bach), while electronic music (esp. Underworld) is more influenced by contemporary classical composers like Cage and Glass (that is, minimalist and other types of avant-garde which leaked into rock music via Eno and Throbbing Gristle (and if you've been listening to latter day Genesis P'orridge, you've been listening to post-prog psychedelic rock-- and there's probably a difference between those genres too).

But they all feed on each other... so who gives a fuck? Enjoy the music you enjoy.
