It's been a year since I was last in - I now have version 5.2.0.something and there doesn't seem to be a bar to paste the URL into? Do people still hang out there?

Try clicking the Skype icon in the upper-right corner of every page on this site. It should take you right there.

I did - and it opens a new browser window in Safari and brings the Skype interface to the front, but doesn't actually take me anywhere :/

I'm sure I'm just being massively special but hopefully I'll be able to get it to work at some point!
