Many people, in this country, have no idea what life is like in other countries…their laws, customs, and culture. They assume the world is like the U.S.. The shock can be devastating. I remember flying in to Singapore, on the way to Malaysia, and having to sign a statement that any drugs found on me, could result in the death penalty and the Embassy couldn’t help me.

Yeah - devastating shock that - the Embassy won't be able to help you if you break the laws of the sovereign state that you are visiting. No shit Sherlock.

Fuck me - those signs in Singapore are excellent - real plain English and the message is clear.

If you traffic drugs, you will be executed. Duh.

How do these fine upstanding citizens of the US qualify for their passports?

I remember being kind of taken aback when I saw those signs at the airport in Taipei. Right there in big, bold letters at the end of the exit ramp. I hadn't been planning on trafficking any drugs, but that sure as hell made sure I never would.

Oh, I can understand why seeing the signs would be a shock - they're very blunt. But the message is clear.

And it's a bit rich to assume that your embassy would help you in a situation like that - if you had put yourself in that situation in the first place. Especially with the old "But, but, but... I'm an American!" line as your defense.

I'm not sure what would happen if you just left the drugs at the end of the air bridge, and didn't bring carry them across the immigration line. Does that still count as "trafficking"?
