what's the rarest record you have?
mine is moby's first 12" single under the name 'the brotherhood' entitled 'time's up'. but even though this had only around 500-1000 copies, mine is extra special because it's a german test pressing. then last march i went and got it signed by moby, and he told me it was the rarest record he'd ever made:

Re: what's the rarest record you have?
hmmm....

I'm actually not sure, but off the top of my head it might be this record that David Bowie released using an alias called "Tao Jones Index". It was released somewhere between '97/'98 if I remember correctly. On the record are two tracks, Pallas Athena and V-2 Schneider, but they're the radically different live versions, with the audience noise mixed out (save for the intro on Pallas Athena)

I think there was only like 1,000 copies made, but I could be wrong

oh, and I have a few Mo' Wax cd's and records that are a bit rare (I think) and the version of FSOL's "The Isness" that was accidentally pressed in the US only (w/ like the proper version of Goodbye Sky on it, not just the 'reprise')....

I'm actually not sure how rare any of my cd's / records are... I really should find out, as I know I've missed out on some profitable purchases...

Re: what's the rarest record you have?
I'll tell you the rarest record I used to have, and my brother in NZ now has it, (but that is a long, bitter story that I won't go into here. And I love him really. )

Hendrix - Electric Ladyland. The album with the cover that was subsequently banned (that's the one - scroll down).

Rare as rocking horse shit on vinyl. Never played it. Mint. And probably worth a mint now too.

Oh well.

Must. Not. Attach. Myself. To. Material. Things.

Edit: I used to own a lot of rare vinyl as a teenager, cos I was extremely spoilt and had a bf in the record business. So rare stuff, since "disappeared" (prolly in NZ as well ) included Substitute by The Who, the first 12" Single of its era, which came in a Polydor red single bag only 12" big like the old singles ones, Miss You by the Stones on pink vinyl 12", Wonderous Stories by Yes, limited edition 2,500 12" blue vinyl, the inevitable Tubular Bells on picture disc, Sticky Fingers by the Stones with the zip cover, etc. etc. etc. etc.
Ho hum

Re: what's the rarest record you have?
hmm....don't really have any records to speak of that are rare.

I have a cd copy from the first pressing of Coil's Musick to play in the Dark Vol. I. It came with a little certificate signed by jhon balance and peter christopherson and was numbered around the low 600s out of I believe 1500 to 2000. The disc was only available via mail order subscription via World Serpent distribution and also made the purchaser privy to forthcoming Coil releases that were quite limited.

I've got a copy of The Isness with the alternate track listening as well, but those aren't too rare.

The rarest record I own is Run 2 by New Order, which isn't as are as some of those mentioned. Wikipedia sez 20,000 were pressed.

Re: what's the rarest record you have?
I have a couple of cds that were only pressed in editons of 100, but they are indiepop, so only certain people would really be interested.

I have an original Arcade Fire ep from the first run of 500, but only a serious collector would really want that as you can get the cd now for cheap as it's been reissued.

The rarest vinyl is probably Tenno by Noise on Org Records.

Re: what's the rarest record you have?
A 3LP marillion bootleg, have to check the title but it's of one of the last concerts they did with fish.
A double picture disc bootleg of U2 'president' prolly only 5 in the whole of europa brought here by a friend of mine from the US.
U2 WAR bootleg, one of the coolest covers for a bootleg (at that time atleast) White 12" size double album cover with the cd at the last page, wrapped in a cut out black U and a 2.
Never seen either of those at recordfairs at the time, can't find them in U2 bootleg archives. But then again, there's 1000's of U2 bootlegs.

Re: what's the rarest record you have?
Probably either the special edition of FSOL's Dead Cities (with the book of artwork), or Urban & Eastern by Youth Group. I read in an interview recently that the band doesn't even have a copy of the latter themselves anymore.

Rare record I wish I had: the 2-CD version of Orbital's InSides with that 30-minute version of The Box on it.
