Hip Hop
So, I want to start hiphop discussion. I know there are people on here that are into it. I myself am a huge fan of old skool hip hop and their political messages. Some names:
At first place definately A Tribe Called Quest. Their productions are fucking ace and Q-Tip is a great rapper. In no particular order: De La Soul. Actually only their first album, that's just pure fun. Eric B & Rakim. They have never put out an album that I like, just some tracks that are fucking ace. Rakim's lyrics are one of the greatest I've heard. "I Know You Got Soul" is perfect. Gang Starr. Productions are fucking good, and I really dig Guru's voice. The music in hiphop/rapmusic is of real importance of me, so Gang Starr is definately one of my favourites. Nas for his fantastic "Illmatic". That's a short but most sweetest sensation. Ice Cube. For real, bitch. Public Enemy. It takes a nation of millions to hold them back! And then I must be forgetting quite some. These days there has been a lot of good hiphop too. I can name Atmosphere, (early) Buck 65, Pete Philly & Perquisite, Cyne, Blackalicious, Danger(MF)doom, Dizzee Rascal, Lyrics Born, RJD2 and more. If you're into hiphop, share your thoughts. It would also be cool if you can interest me into new stuff. |

Re: Hip Hop
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein.
I was talking to a friend of mine, who is also into all types of music, and when I mentioned this album he interrupted and said, "The Cold Vein is the greatest album of all time of any genre." I don't know that I'd agree with him, but I wouldn't argue with him, either. Check it out. Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep This is my most recent love. Good lyrics, beatiful beats, diverse, great production. Awesome album. Diverse - One A.M. I think this guy might be one of the best emcees ever. The album isn't as high on my list as some others, but holy shit when he's on, he's on. Check out the songs, "Build", "Move", "Certified", "747", and, uhhh, that one by Madlib. Damn. Can't remember the name. Cage - Hell's Winter Not as good as the others here, in my opinion, but interesting. Hell of an effort. Former junky examines his vices and his youth.

Re: Hip Hop
OH! And the fucking Wu, man! Wu-Tang forever!
Seriously: Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Method Man's Tical are classics. GZA's Liquid Sword. Ghostfaces' Pretty Toney album. Masta Killah's No Said Date. All of those are money well spent. For tracks, check out Guillotine by Raekwon or Shadowboxin' by the GZA. Those tracks turn me on they're so hot. "Poisonous paragraph smash the phonograph in half..."

Re: Hip Hop
Thanks for the suggestions, will check them all out.
Prefuse 73 has also colaborated with GZA and Mastah Killa, the tracks' called "Just A Throught" which turns me on like... well I get really horney from it. it's short but fucking sweet, Get this. And yeah, Roots Manuva. I have "Run Come Save Me" and it's fucking amazing. He's got a VERY own style. His productions are fucking good. I do have the SONG "awfully deep", not the album. Will try to check that out too. Now receiving the Cannibal Ox album, will let you know what I think ![]() Edit: Shadowboxin' is ace. Last edited by Leon; 02-02-2006 at 02:34 PM. |

Re: Hip Hop
First of all Atmosphere. Their lyrics are great. Slug can talk about girls like nobody can ( especially about his ex Lucy
). The productions from Dj Ant are great aswell. Slugs side projects are worth the listen aswell, like the album "Felt" he did with Murs.I'm going to see him saturday in the melkweg, amsterdam and i know he will deliver. Dalek makes hip hop like you have never heard before. He blends ambience and other electronic music with hip hop. It may take a while to get into it but when that time finally comes it's fucking great. Dalek presents everything very well. Buck 65 is one of my favourite mc's. He mixes hiphop with folk, country and punkmusic. His lyrics are like poetry. He also gives kickarse live performances so check them out. A kickarse interview with buck http://oc-tv.net/buck-65.htm Gang Starr has made one of the best hip hop albums ever, called "Hard to earn". It comes from the golden year 1994. People are maybe going to hate me for saying this but Eminem's album "Slim shady" is fucking awesome. The lyrics are funny as hell and you will be laughing all the time. The production is also far better than the shit he makes today. Sage Francis, another white boy, makes great hip hop, half of the time i don't even know what he is talking about. All good though, great beats and his anger shines through every song. KRS One is a legend for one reason...his self titled album. Forget about his new shit, just listen to this one. Other favourites: Pete Philly and Perquisite - Mindstate (2005) Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle (1994) Ice Cube - The predator (1992) Eric B and Rakim - Follow the leader (1988) Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back (1988) Nas - Illmatic (includes songs produced by DJ Premier) (1994) Anti-Pop Consortium - Arrhythmia (2002) A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory (1991) Blackalicious - The craft (2005) MF Doom - Operation Doomsday (1999) Aesop Rock - Labor days (2001)

Re: Hip Hop
why hasn't anyone mentioned the roots yet
their "come alive" album is IMO one of the best "live-recorded-albums". also the fugees should be mentioned! "the score" is one of the main reasons i started listening to hip hop... Quote:

Re: Hip Hop
Like Monkeyboy is saying, definately check out Pete Philly & Perquisite. They're actually a Dutch act and they reside at Epitaph records. A Lot of great music on that label.
Anyway, Pete Philly & Perquisite also has an own style. They are really versatile, and their album "Mindstate" describes a lot of states of the mind. On top of that, Perquisite plays a lot of instruments so Cello, flutes, sax and more are also featured on the album. It's really amazing. And I'm being enthousiastic about it because it's Dutch for fucks sake, not a lot of good shit comes from Holland. Last edited by Leon; 02-02-2006 at 02:50 PM. |
